The black company By Glenn Cook : A gem of dark fantasy : follow the story of a band of mercenaries in a dark and complex word. As always with Cook, the narrator is unreliable, so free to you to imagine what are the facts behind the story.

You beat me to it. One of the best series I've ever read.

I've read 2-5, but I'm more interested in fantasy. Thank you anyways.

I usually read Historic Fiction (Could give you a few suggestions if you'd want to), but a few titles would be:
  • The Iliad and the Odyssey
  • The Fountains of Paradise, by Arthur C. Clarke
  • Ilium, by Dan Simons (Havn't read the rest of the series yet)
  • Pretty much anything by Jules Verne (Though they're technically travel stories, they contain some sci-fi avant la letre)

something with more innovation. Perhaps one of those books where
someone from this world goes to another would be good.

Stranger in a Strange Land, by Robert Heinlein.

Dragonriders of Pern is a bit...iffy. I liked it, but the rape scenes...not so much.

What the hell was it with mid 80s fantasy novels and rape?

I could understand it a bit more if she didn't write them as if they were romantic.

Huh. I only read the first one, but I don't remember that. Welp, good thing I didn't read further, that sounds horrific.

Permutation City by Greg Egan

Part One was really excellent, part two not so much.

Do you mean good books, or books I've been reading?

In any case, if you want something that fits in both slots, try Dream of the Red Chamber by Cao Xueqin. It's a good pick for the un(der)employed or otherwise chronically bored- it clocks in at about 2000 pages. A word of warning: it's a Chinese novel, so the names can be a little hard for Westerners to keep track of (was that Concubine Chao or Concubine Chou?), and in any case there's loads of named characters, most of whom are from the same family, so they have the same surname, which of course comes first. I have a little stack of 3 by 5 index cards on which I put every character.

Haha, I love The Black Company, awesome book. I even found one of the sequels in a run down bookstore once and read it and it too was good.
