I did it again: I'm out of books to read. I need help finding a good book to read.

My tastes:
I like fantasy. I like Garth Nix, Shadows of the Apt, all kinds of things like that. Right now I am not in the mood for really Lord of the Ringsy books, but something with more innovation. Perhaps one of those books where someone from this world goes to another would be good.

Atlas Shrugged. Even if you think she's a lunatic Ayn Rand is still a must read, even if only as an intellectual exercise. I'm currently rereading The Fountainhead for English and enjoying it.

Pick up The White Wolf and The Swords of Night and Day. Skilgannon the Damned and Druss the Legend will not let you down.

Steven Erikson's Malazan Book of the Fallen series. First book is Gardens of the Moon. Excellent fantasy books, between 500 and 1000 pages each, with several published, and almost yearly. It will keep you occupied for a while, if you enjoy it. It's the best series I've read.

Stephen King is a good author. If you like his writings, The Dark Tower series should fit what you're looking for nicely.

If you haven't read it yet, A Song of Ice and Fire is another very original fantasy series, and very entertaining.

Yes. I read Anthem, and it was quite good.

I'm personally rather wary of real world to crossover books, I've never read one I particularly liked, but that's just me.

Discworld is heartily delicious, and I do recommend it, however if you're looking for more straight faced fantasy there's "The Name of the Wind", which is slightly traditional fantasy but still rather unique in setting. It's full of a lot of character, and goes down easy.

If you want something unique, I'd suggest the Temeraire series. You can't get much more unique than that...

Can't really think of any more examples off the top of my head.

Hands down one of my favorite series, pretty damn long though with over 10 books but a good read regardless.

I can only half recommend this.

IMO the series plummeted after book 6. I gave up after book 10 lacked anything resembling a climax (seriously when I finished it, I was like, that was it?).
First six books though (especially the first three) are pretty damn awesome, though.


Also there's some seriously weird mars and venus psychology that bugged me to no end but was never bad enough to distract too much.

I've noticed long book series tend to get pretty hard to bear after a while. But the good ol' Wheel of Time series is a good read.

Funny story, "The Gather Storm" actually provoked a bit of a philosophical revelation in me when I was at the depths of my depression. I don't want to explain how exactly, but to put it simply I felt pretty much exactly as Rand did at the end of the book.

But yes, the Mars Venus psychology really bothered me too.

If you are at all inclined to read W40k stuff, you could try out the Horus Heresy, or the Eisenhorn trilogy. Other favorites of mine from that universe are Soul Hunter and it's sequel Blood Reaver (goofy names, great books) by Aaron Dembski-Bowden, and their spiritual predecessor, Lord of the Night by Simon Spurrier. I'm one of those slavering 40k fans though, and I'm aware it isn't to everyone's taste.

Isaac Asimov's Foundation series is great. The Galactic Empire is collapsing and thirty-thousand years of dark ages are incoming. A scientist ('psychohistorian') deduces that by establishing a 'foundation' at the end of the galaxy to act as a haven of scientific knowledge and human progress, he can reduce the barbarous period from 30,000 years to a mere 1,000. The series follows the trials the Foundation must face on its path to bring about the new empire.

The series is old, and definitely shows its age, but it's an enjoyable read nonetheless. My favorite sci-fi series by far.
