There comes a time when you must take off the soft, furry slippers of a boy and put on the shoes of a man.
Unless of course they don't fit properly and your feet blister up like bubble wrap.
Oh ho ho, but don't try to return the shoes, because they won't take them back once you've worn them.
Especially if that fat pig Tony is at the desk.

Hm. Well it's not like they haven't made games based on South Park before. They never took themselves seriously (obviously) and some of them were kind of fun. It'll be interesting to see the previews and trailers that come out for this as it nears completion, might be pretty hilarious.

A lot of them were horrible. I rented one once because my friends said it was good.

Little did I know it was wretched...

Anyhow it is hardly impossible to make a good game based off of just about any show.

It is just that they never really try because people are stupid and will buy anything with their favorite show on it.

So my guess: South Part with be Obsideon Shovel junk!

It's being overseen by Trey and Matt and Obsidian isn't exactly a cash-grab tie in company.  I bet it'll be good.

Even if the gameplay isn't the best, it will likely be worth playing for the story - if they're deeply involved there's a good chance it'll be hilarious.

Judging by the cover, I wonder if they're going for a fable-like action rpg...

So, it's a game, being made by Obsidian (!) based on Fun Times With Weapons and a pastiche of generic fantasy RPGs, with the actual series creators looking over their shoulders.

I'm optimistic.

For the record, I owned the original Nintendo64 South Park game, which was basically a really shitty total-conversion of Turok, whose only saving grace was the voiceacting.  Yeah, it's quite the hurdle to overcome for me.  That in mind, I'm kinda surprised it's taken this long for a South Park game to be produced as a serious enterprise by a serious company.  Sounds more like it should have happened around 2007.

I would actually say Obsidian Entertainment is a bad sign as far as the quality of the game goes. I know them mostly for producing follow-on games to Bioware hits that were nowhere near as fun or well-designed. Maybe they've gotten better since the last time I bought one of their products, but...

Matter of perspective, I suppose.  They produced Fallout: New Vegas, KOTOR 2, and way back in the day Planescape: Torment, one of the best CRPGs ever made.  You are right that they exist to make sequels to RPG headliners, but what they do with that is a bit different from most game companies.  They're not that great at the whole "gameplay" thing; all of their famous titles are whatever game engine Bioware gave them with very lackluster bosses and encounters and such.  What Obsidian's always been good at, as far as I'm concerned, is story and dialogue.  I remember their games for the experience of playing them, not because they were necessarily "fun".

Which makes putting their skills to use in South Park of all things pretty mystifying.  That makes it worth playing for me, just to see where the fuck Chris Avellone takes it.  I have this weird sense that Matt and Trey actually sought them out for it.

Ya never know, this could turn out to be brilliant. I remember getting a Three Stooges video game for the NES one time thinking it was a total waste of money.....turned out to be a great little game. Every once in a while, one of these synergized products turns out not to suck.

At first I thought this was going to be total shit.

But now that I'm thinking it'll be a parody of all of the other RPG's out there and it's written by the creators of south park, this might actually be pretty good.

Someone over at NeoGaf got the issues of GameInformer already and posted some really interesting tidbits.

Eric Cartman will greet your character and help you decide your class, which are wizard, paladin, adventurer, rogue, and a fifth unconventional class made up by Cartman.

I'm putting money on class five being 'Jew'

It's based on their engine for Dungeon Siege 3 (which was an original creation of theirs and reasonably polished despite being used for a pretty mediocre game) BUT the combat seems like it's directly inspired (some would say ripped off but those people are idiots) from Paper Mario and the like :D

This is the first South Park game actually involving the creators in any way and they're basing the story mostly on parodying RPGs they played when they were younger and the overblown drama therein. Silent protagonist and all. There will be Obsidian mainstays too, like a factions system.

The game is entirely 2D and seems to have a town hub as well as various adventure areas. Art assets are taken directly from South Park Studios library although I imagine they'll have some new stuff obviously.

I was REALLY skeptical when I heard the idea but actually reading into the details it sounds like a game I want a lot.

This above all else piques my interest. The Mario RPGs have some of the most fun turn based combat I've ever played.

Yah seriously, for me this is the thing about the game I like most. I owned a playstation instead of an N64 but I loved Paper Mario a ton and taking your combat system from them is good in my book. The only thing that would make it more amazing? Instead of South Park, lets see it be Adventure Time please.
