Venting Rage Via Crossbow Training
« on: December 01, 2011, 10:44:58 pm »

So I built a nice little arena underground, I had planned for an epic battle between a cyclops and a bunch of disarmed goblins.  It was all perfect (enough), it even had a balcony for spectators.  However when I pulled the trigger, the goblins befriended the cyclops or something, because they won't fight eachother.  I was pretty pissed off unimpressed, so I handed a peasant a crossbow and hundreds of bolts and now he is using the balcony overhang to shoot them.  This is actually better than a fight because he is leveling marksdwarf up and I get to see blood coat the arena.

I always use Forgotten Beasts at the bottom of my drop pits. Aint no friendliness down there.

However when I pulled the trigger, the goblins befriended the cyclops or something, because they won't fight each other.

In my forts caught invaders seem to avoid fighting as best they can and will only defend themselves when cornered, and they prioritize trying to escape.

Let's say I put two giants (I get a lot of those since I made them form hostile civilizations) and a dwarf in an arena that's accessible via doors, right? In all likelihood, one giant will defend itself against my dwarf and the other will pound on the doors trying to get out. Your cyclops not fighting your goblins is largely consistent with my observations.

Yep, that's why I got pissed and ordered death by bone bolts. Slowly.

Were the bolts made of goblin and/or cyclops bones? Perhaps elf bones?

Was this the cyclops in the previous thread? Aw, poor thing, I guess it'll look cooler as a porcupine though :D

Last post before I stop reviving this, figured I'd post how the 'arena' turned out.  Gonna be fun to watch these battles.

Sloped walls was an accident :(

By the looks of that screenshot, I'd say it is.

And because it's me again, yes. He pissed me off, but now I have a decent marksdwarf training facility!  I was gonna do something fancy to remember the cyclops by but nah, he was retarded.

I have a question, if you have... let's say an enemy elf archer, and a human archer. If you send a dwarf running between them, and an arrow hits one or the other... will it start a war between the two?

They would already try killing each other even if the dwarf wasn't there.

The Human would win of course, since we don't call twigs arrows.

Twigs are still better arrows then those splinters the elves use.

I was always under the impression the elves would be better off firing strawberries :P

Strawberries can be deadly, if made out of lead.  I am amazed the dwarves haven't invented a cannon yet, I have no idea how to operate catapults.

I always envisioned dwarf catapults to be more like this:

Just because they can only fire at the level they're on.
