How many pokemon are we going to use would be a good starting point.

Haha, sounds good!  8)

The Merman starter sounds good, if you wanted to keep the vanilla elemental trioness you could use Carp though.

Grass... probably use Horse ---> Unicorn ---> War Unicorn.

Weren't we going a different set of elemental trios?

Fire/Dark for Boatborn for a start.

In response to the concerns about the ROM, I'll be pulling the link down from the OP. Since the actual ROM that we've hacked will be contained in the github that GlyphGryph has set up, that's not much of a problem.

Fire / Dark and Water / Ghost, am I right? Then we'd need a Grass / Fighting counter type.

Actually, that would remove the elemental match ups. Hmmn. Am I right in thinking dark hits for 2x on ghost?

Boatborn : An stone elephant-like creature with flaming eyes.
Evolutions: Boatblasted -> Boatmurdered

Carp: A mutant fish that has been twisted by pollution.
Evolutions: Recarp (zombie carp, oh god) -> Necrowhale (zombie whale) (This tree comes from being exposed to a necrostone)
                Megacarp -> Forgotten Beast

And the last one is obviously a Unicorn of dark/steel type. Which fits, I think. ;)

I've been mulling your typing... as the cycle stands, it's supposed to be Boatmurdered > Unicron > Megacarp > Boatmurdered, aye?

Fire/Rock would have the type effectiveness of Magcargo-  Note that this is damaged normally by Dark and Steel, and while it resists Poison it is REALLY weak to Water.

Water/Poison would have the type effectiveness of Tentacool- Megacarp would resist Steel and Fire (take normal damage from Rock and Dark, though, so it'd be a wash).

Dark/Steel would have the type effectiveness of Pawniard- Weak to fire (but resistant to Rock) as expected, Unaffected by Poison and damaged normally by Water.

The upshot is that none of the starters resist all of the others' elemental moves, and Water/Poison wouldn't have a weakness. May I propose the following changes?

Boatmurdered family- Fire/Ghost. Has the appearance of a ghostly elephant wreathed in flames. Would have the type effectiveness of Litwick, making it weak to Dark, but resist Steel and unaffected by Fighting

Megacarp family- Dragon/Dark. An zombie Carp that grows into an enormous Skeletal Carp. Would have the type effectiveness of Deino, making it weak to Fighting, resistant to Ghost and Fire, and damaged normally Steel.

Unicron family- Fighting/Steel. A Unicorn with steel hooves and horn, known for its aggressiveness. Would have the type effectiveness of Cobalion, making it weak to Fire, resistant to Ghost, Dragon, and REALLY resistant to Dark

Analysis:

Boatmurdered vs Unicron- Boatmurdered resists Steel and is unaffected by Fighting. Unicron is weak to the Fire but resistant to the Ghost, which helps balance the fact Boatmurdered doesn't care at ALL about half his moves. Still well in favor of Boatmurdered, but not disastrously so.

Boatmurdered vs Megacarp- Boatmurdered is weak to Dark and damaged normally by Dragon. Megacarp is resistant to both Fire and Ghost. Advantage- Megacarp

Unicron vs Megacarp- Unicron is resistant to Dragon and extra resistant to Dark. Megacarp is weak to Fighting and damaged normally by Steel. Advantage- Unicron.

Boatmurdered > Unicron > Megacarp > Boatmurdered.

FAKEEDIT: WARNING: FOUR NEW REPLIES

I like the idea of having the various towns be notable community fortresses. Not all of them should be, if for no other reason than we can't have them ALL be towns of darkness and fire, but the ones we can make interesting should be in.

I propose, however, that the starting town be the Wiki.

Here is the post in question.

As is, it could work, but the idea of having dragon on carp and not water... is rather odd. And a unicorn fighting type, which insinuates it uses martial arts. Hmmn.

Hmm... I like the idea for that last one. Having a mechanical pokemon that evolves into ever more deadly traps - maybe depending on what sort of stone you give it?

Pullame - A simple dwarfomon, it can't move much beyond wiggling it's rod back and forth.
Moves: Flail, Counter

Evolutions:
(with Steel Stone)Spikayu - A flat dwarfomon, it can't move much, but it can quickly extend large sharp spikes from its body to pierce those who wander too close. (various spikeish moves, Poison Sting)
(with Earth Stone)Smashayu - A floating pokemon, Smashayu attacks by floating over the enemy and letting go of the heavy rock it enjoys carrying around. (Levitate, Rock Smash)
(with Magma Stone)Meltayu - This mechanical pokemon doesn't look like much, but get it angry it will shoot jets of lava at you. (Explosion, Magma Stream)
(Reaches lv10) - Kageyu

Also, I honestly don't think we need to worry about start type advantages. We should just go with whatever.

Our eevee pokemon, eh? Sounds good.

Hmmm. Would it be possible to get an attack that would reduce the enemy pokemon to one HP and no lower? Trapayu, our Cage Trap pokemon.

That would work! :D

I'm still looking at a lack of electric / ice types though. Could put in Blizzard Men and such for ice, and sasquatches, but... electric? Maybe gremlins. Still, there's not much choice there.

About start types - personally, I'd be for picking between 3 rarish pokes that you can still catch later on in the game, to avoid people having to start the hack again just to try two more pokes out.

Obviously it would also have moves to prevent the opponent from switching out. :P

Hmmm, could we combine the two? Make it one move that prevents the pokemon from switching/running and reduces it to one HP. Maybe it might also combine the explosion's self death part, too.

There's a pokemon ability (Arena Trap) that stops enemies from switching/running.

Custom moves is the one part I haven't looked at at all, but my guess is that it's the hardest and it makes the learning curve on the game even steeper. Maybe we should try to stay to vanilla Generation III pokemon moves/abilities?

The moment the lever was pulled, somebody's pet kitten stepped onto the bridge. I read somewhere that if a cat falls more than 11 stories, it instinctively flares its legs out to increase air resistance. This slows it down enough to stick the landing with relatively minor injuries. In Dwarf Fortress, apparently, cats don't do that.

Just make it, along with all the other trap pokemon's abilities, "Arena Trap".  ;)

Every trainer will want one, because it will be hellah useful for catching pokes :D

Edit : You can edit moves?  :o
