bluh, got me before I edited. :P

That first one was supposed to say Uncarp.

I'm gonna do some ROM edits now. I need to fix move lists anyways. I'm going to swap Odor Sleuth and Fake Tears, and everything will be perfect again as soon as someone switches it so the rival picks the opposite pokemon.

Actually, Pursuit's the only dark move that has potential to deal a reasonable amount of damage I think and that's at level 15, so having Perlihorn be Psychic wouldn't be a disadvantage against Uncarp, really. It WOULD be a disadvantage against Boatborn's ghost type moves though, so it keeps the rockpaperscissors-ness.

Edit: Hmm just realized that doesn't make as much sense as I'd hoped. For some reason I thought the second evo was grass/psychic. We could make it Grass though? That should still work.

The moment the lever was pulled, somebody's pet kitten stepped onto the bridge. I read somewhere that if a cat falls more than 11 stories, it instinctively flares its legs out to increase air resistance. This slows it down enough to stick the landing with relatively minor injuries. In Dwarf Fortress, apparently, cats don't do that.

Welp, if that's the case one would only have to do something about Uncarp vs. Boatborn since that's a fairly balanced match.

Which is as it should be, since Uncarp has type advantage but Boatborn has early game advantage, is what I'm saying. Conceptually, it makes sense for their match to be closest to even.

I'm alright with the starter asymmetry, I just think Perlihorn should stand some small chance against Boatborn, if only so the player can feel proud of pulling off the upset.

Nice! Are the mountain/tree corner and edge pieces custom? Or were they in there already?

Bit of both. Used advance maps to combine the already existing textures into new tiles that I added to the set.

I also went ahead and renamed the town so now my Boatborn shows up as caught in MAYDAY VILLAGE, but that's irrelevant.

Cool. I'll have to ask how you did it/ask for a link to a tutorial sometime.

1) Get Advance Map
2) Open up the Alabastia map (it's map 3.0)
3) Click the puzzle piece
4) SCIENCE!

's what I did.

Ok. I've been working with Advance Map, so I have that. I just haven't fiddled around with the tile editing to the point where I got it to work, I guess.

Okay, while I broke things in my rom version (which is good, I guess, since the changes would have overwrote or been overwritten by Darvi's anyways), I think the following works:

Perlihorn, odor sleuth is swapped with fake tears.

If player picks perlihorn, rival picks uncarp. Standard Advantage: Perlihorn
If player picks boatboarn, rival picks perlihorn. Total Advantage: Boatborn (guaranteed victory, some text with rival complaining about how it wasn't fair would be fun, I think)
If player picks uncarp, rival picks boatborn. Small Advantage: Uncarp

It players alright, and it works with the dialogue I had in my head. What do you guys think?

Shouldn't it be the other way round?

Yes, it an inversion. Considering the fact that we've developed our rival character as someone we repeatedly trounce, it sets a nice precedent, I think. Just imagine him picking his favorite instead of trying to pick one to kill you - and then you bring his chosen pokemon to the brink of death, and it only scrapes through with Tarn's help!
