Yes, sandshrew is called sandshrew, but the actual design of the mon doesn't seem to be particularly sandy!

So I'm assuming it's any creature that lives in/digs through the dirt and sand. The one thing they all seem to have in common is the ability to burrow to a certain extent, or to be dual rock type. Hmm...
Pretty much. The Sandshrew line is considered to be based upon a shrew mixed with the pangolin which is a desert animal , Diglet and Drillbur are pretty obvious, Goletts made of clay, the Flygon line is based off Antlions, ect.

I have absolutely no idea whats up with Cubone though.

Actually, looking at the list of Ground-types I think at least 1/3 of them are only Ground to fill gaps in number of Ground pokemon or because they're similar to an already-existing Rock-type and they want to distinguish the two. I think Cubone would have been Normal if Normal could hit Ghost types, but they made them Ground because it's super effective against poison, so they were good against the Ghosts in Lavender town where you found them.

The moment the lever was pulled, somebody's pet kitten stepped onto the bridge. I read somewhere that if a cat falls more than 11 stories, it instinctively flares its legs out to increase air resistance. This slows it down enough to stick the landing with relatively minor injuries. In Dwarf Fortress, apparently, cats don't do that.

So, if we're going with the "desert" theme as one part, does that mean we could have some sort of desert scorpion monster that could be Bug/Ground?

That sounds like it could be fun!

So what sort of monsters do we have in DF that are digging or desert based? ... worms?

Camels? Cacti? Vultures? Fairly standard stuff, I guess.

I'm in favor of Sandworms, if only for the Dune shoutouts.

Nightwings, Camels, and Giant Desert Scorpions would be the exciting desert creatures in DF. Bug/Ground for GDS sounds right to me.

What way were you using, exactly? I don't know how you came in, so don't know what alternative to recommend.

I've noticed its strangely empty.

Anyways:
XChat is a good client
ChatZilla is good, and comes as a firefox addon
Mibbit
Mirc
Pidgin
AdiIRC
The Opera browser has irc built in

All options

1) Tools -> Chatzilla
2) You'll get a popup window for Chatzilla itself. You now need to attach to the right IRC- in this case, irc.newnet.net  Just type "/attach irc.newnet.net" sans the quotes
3) A new tab will open in the Chatzilla client, and you'll probably have to wait a few seconds while it connects. Once it does, you'll get a whole mess of text you can more or less ignore for now. You want to join the Bay12Dwarfomons channel. Just type "/join #Bay12Dwarfomons" without the quotes, and you're in.
4) ??
5) Profit!

Ok, as of 4:45pm 17/12/11 I'm sifting through the chatlogs. i'll get back to you all in the thread once i've got a cohesive plot going. I might upload the PDF when I'm done if anyone wants to peruse it.

Also, I found this and some of the spriters may find this useful.
