Why are we still confined to are embark area in fortress mode but can move freely in adventurer mode?

i was playing a adventurer going back to one of my old forts and it kinda hit me, what makes fort mode lag so bad yet doesn't affect adventurer mode?

Adventure mode is turn-based, so lag would be less noticeable. Also your adventurer doesn't have two hundred followers pathing to pretty much everything.

And in adventurer mode the player can't explore the underground as he does in Dwarf mode.

Lag is even an issue in Adventure Mode. Toady has mentioned needing to handle the cities in new ways for this reason. I assume a lot of the NPCs will be abstracted rather than having the whole lot pathfinding tile at a time all the time.

While I love the idea of a "pathfinder" job that would travel semi-randomly to other places, revealing stuff, I dont think it would be worth the lag of dealing with other places.
