No hauling of food?
« on: August 12, 2006, 11:05:00 pm »

I built a food pile and try as I might, no food hauling jobs are added to the [j]obs menu.  It manifested itself fairly enough at first: the dwarves would harvest from the field I planted near the river:

And drop off the harvested plants in the food pile.  However, a sleep cycle caught up to me at the perfect moment and several of the dwarves dropped their loads of plump helmets right in the middle of the hallway immediately after harvesting them.

I decided to give an installation order for a door in front of the food pile since I was wary about the frequent mandrill monkey attacks in my last fortress (which is still going strong in a different world, but I wanted to try a fresh start with a less cluttered fortress).

After a long while, I noticed that a couple of the plump helmets had withered, so I checked the [j]ob list, and none of the plump helmets awaiting storage had jobs designated for them at all!  I went ahead and specified that I'd like the field to go fallow for now, since it was nearing the middle of autumn and I didn't want them planting any more seeds.

It was then that I noticed that no one had moved any of the barrels that were outside of my fortress to the food pile in the middle of the fortress.  On more than one occasion, the dwarves would carry their load of plump helmets all the way across the screen to the food pile near where the wagons were sited by default (you can still see the scrap from the wagons):

I went ahead and drew a food pile there and set up a "take-from" order for my old food pile from this new pile, but no one attempted to move any of the food to the new pile either.

After a short while, I was rewarded with a huge cloud of miasma at my trade depot:

I was furious because I gave a whole box of stonecrafts to the dwarf traders for 20 pieces of miscellaneous meats, and the meats just sat in the trade depot until they rotted.  The trade depot is practically adjacent to the food pile, with only a couple dozen tiles' separation, and I figured that was the surest sign of a bug.

It might have something to do with the experimental "whitespace" layout of my fortress.  I wanted a fortress that had a fortified entrance (fortifications not yet built) and a trade depot within the mountainside (built, but mostly obscured by stink), with a secondary entrance beyond the 3-tile-wide road (not yet built) where the dwarves would enter their standard living complex.

I've never had problems with hauling food before...

I made certain they weren't.  I even removed the door (the door you see there in the screenshot is actually just waiting to be brought to a furniture pile).

I haven't seen any of my dwarves leaving food lying around (even if they drop it while hauling) but I've never gotten them to pick up any food from the trade depot either. Although when they get interrupted with food tasks at the kitchen/fish cleaners/brewers the food items sometimes get left there to rot.

yeah it is definatly going on, I am pretty sure it was not happening in 93_19c they would always unload whatever was in the wagon right away.

- just tested some more and what JT is describing is happening, food rotting everywhere!

please help toady everybody is going to starve!

I did make a food pile and they brought a barrel of seed to it, and I made one food pile right next to my wagon and they put one new barrel there and put some raw fish. I thought it was fixed, so I undesignated that pile, hoping that they would take everything inside.

my problem with food pile isn't the food itself. it's the barrels.

when they finish eating the contents inside the barrel, they keep shifting the barrels onto my furniture pile. leaving the food pile empty and the furniture pile full. seems a bit pointless when they'll have to go all the way back to the furniture pile to get barrels later on.

just had a thought. why not have a toggle for eating (just like cook/brew)... or even cooked/ingredient food piles?

I'm not currently getting the buggy behavior.
I can move food back and forth between inside and outside piles by deleting and replacing them.

Any save folders would be useful, then it should be easy to find and fix.  I don't have any ideas right now. (region#.save + region folder from data/save to toadyone@bay12games.com if you've got the ability to shoot off 6 to 9 MB to me).

I've received one save on this issue which is going to help me rewrite storage handling a bit.  I should get that up today/tomorrow.  I'm not sure if this will resolve all of the problems.  As an indicator of what I'm working on -- if the [j] screen has a number of storage jobs equal to or exceeding the number of dwarves, and they aren't the kind you want, then those need to be handled first before it does the kind you want.  I'm currently changing this behavior.

Okay, I've made this change and it really seems to help.  Food was stored almost immediately.  We'll see if it resolves issues on other maps when I post the next one.  This could lead to more hauling than before, but for now, if you don't want somebody hauling, turn the hauling off in [vpl].  The others should pick up the slack properly now (in the release I'll put soonish).
