Hardcore Military is fun
« on: November 29, 2011, 12:13:33 am »

6 man squads. they get a wooden shield, a weapon, and a helmet.
They train year round, unless there's hauling that NEEDS to get done.
when the cage traps catch goblins, we drop them 3 at a time into a room where they fight a squad, whichever has the fewest members. No squad gets disbanded, and they never get re-staffed. they all fight into the ground.

not many of them last long, but my doctors get ALOT of practice.

you should try it.

Well, it's one of the more interesting ways to kill off unwanted dwarves, and unlike atomsmashing or other death chambers it does at least train your medical staff.

I am trying to make chickens lay bees as eggs. So far it only produces a single "Tame Small Creature" when a hen lays bees.
Honestly at the time, I didn't see what could go wrong with crowding 80 military Dwarves into a small room with a necromancer for the purpose of making bacon.

Oh, they do get disbanded. When you abandon fortress.
And if you do, imagine how the banners they bear look. They just move to another fortress and the banner has an additional sticker / honorary mentioning on it. It could be quite ragged though.

Use a drop shaft to give your doctors some training! >:(
Roof
Bridge
Open space
Floor

Give em metal armor, station them on the end of a 4+long by 3 wide bridge. Set the lever to repeat. They'll last a couple years and your doctors will be all the better for it

The best and most equitable training for doctors I've found is the "spike of fortune". Set up an upright metal spear in the middle of your meeting area and a pressure plate connected to it in your booze stash.

Edit: I suppose it depends on whether you consider "best" as bloody, chaotic, potentially ruinous and incredibly hilarious.
