Will dwarves melt an item if it is being worn currently?
« on: November 28, 2011, 01:02:20 pm »

Say i designate all iron breastplates for melting in the stocks screen, but some dwarves are currently wearing a few of them. Will the dwarves remove them so they can be melted?

As well, if ordered to will dwarves melt, or dump, or move at all, an item that has been forbidden?

I don't know about items that are being worn, but forbidden items will not be touched.  If you want to melt or dump them, you have to unforbid them first.

I don't know about something already being worn either, but as far as I know, they won't pick up a melt-designated item. You can forbid the breastplate if they're wearing it(they should drop it), and designate it for melting.

Furnace operators won't go after worn items, and forbidden armour and weapons won't be automatically dropped (just tried it). You might have seen the odd forbidden held weapon anyway, probably from stuckins that happened when forbid orders were set to 'forbid your death items'. Dwarves will dump worn items so long as they're not forbidden.

I am trying to make chickens lay bees as eggs. So far it only produces a single "Tame Small Creature" when a hen lays bees.
Honestly at the time, I didn't see what could go wrong with crowding 80 military Dwarves into a small room with a necromancer for the purpose of making bacon.

I suppose you could dunk the offending dwarf in magma, that should get some melting done.... Though probably of the dwarf, rather than the armor.

No, but you can select their squad, change their uniform to something else then change it immediately back.  When you unpause they will take everything off and put it back on again except for the forbidden items.

I thought 'complained about the draft lately' meant they didn't have a door to their room.

I think these things are forbidden because the dwarf gets attached to them and does not want anybody to touch it.
But I might be wrong. :P

Am I the only one that thinks it would be perfectly dwarf-like for them to melt down worn items /WHILE THE ITEM IS STILL BEING WORN/?  That was the first thing that came to mind when I saw this thread.

Same here.

My next thought:

My dwarves are actually doing this all the time.
Everyone in my fortress unlucky enough to wear armour is pressure-baked and recycled to earrings.

Stone earrings.
