Do ghosts stab dwarfs?
« on: November 28, 2011, 12:37:44 am »

I just got an announcment that some cheese maker had died, so i zoomed to the stop and see his dead body with a very long trail of blood leading away from it, i followed it and at the end i find a dwarf ghost sitting there.  I don't see any combat log or anything of that sort so im really curious as to what happened here/how the ghost killed him.

Was 'heart' greyed out on the dead dwarf? Look for a heart. Ghost ripped his heart out. I'd believe it.

And in the next version, that ghost dwarf will kill its own zombie. Hnng.

I dunno about stabbing, but violent ghosts can definitely kill dwarves.  I've heard of some that do bizarre things like just removing the upper body and leaving the rest of the corpse in a neat little pile.  Presumably they're able to just grab whatever part they choose and rip it off.

If it's not showing up in your combat [r]eports, try checking gamelog.txt.

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

Well i just had it happen again, i caught it saying the ghost had battered someone in the log this time, i looked and it apparently ripped his right arm off, ouch.

Id also like to state this is one hardcore dwarf, arm ripped off and he didn't bat an eye just keeps on working, and its only listen as a minor injury in his thoughts lol.

Aha, my previous escapades in ghost science are no longer useless! I am a ghostologist and in my fort Chirpacted I killed a bunch of people then observed their ghosts. Contrary to what people have suggested I have never seen or heard of a dwarf bleeding to death after being dismembered by a ghost but I have seen what you're describing several times. When a ghost tears off a limb there isn't any "damage" to be repaired so the dwarves go about their business like nothing happened unless they can no longer hold a pick or axe. They also don't continue to lose blood after the initial attack, a dwarf can have his leg ripped off at the hip but the only blood loss will be from the actual ripping and he won't bleed any further.

What you're describing, the trail of blood to a corpse, tells me that the ghost without a doubt cut his throat. The injury isn't severe enough to cause the dwarf to stop working so they just go along their merry way for about ten feet spraying blood the whole way and then kill over leaving a trail of blood.

This seems like the stuff of horror movies.
Then again Dwarf Fortress itself seems like one big horrorfest, no horror movie could ever accurately depict the horror and madness that occurs in this game, ghosts tearing off limbs while the living victims ignore it and go about their business is probably one of the tamer occurances that happens in this game.

Amusingly, Broseph Stalin discovered that in the right circumstances you can turn the tables on the ghosts, as a dwarf in a fell mood can attempt to harvest the skin/bones of ghosts (as they do with living dwarfs), which kills the ghost without producing any components, causing the fell dwarf to continue his search.

I've had a Dwarf have her head ripped off by a ghost. Legendary speardwarf husband goes berserk at his loss, grabs his adamantine spear and kills an entire goblin siege single handedly. Paths to my fort, gets stuck in cage trap, becomes undefeated competitor in gladiatorial games :P

If you ever want someone to avoid speaking to you for the rest of your life read them a combat log.

Dwarves biting the head off some weird amorphous lobster, only to have them get splattered in deadly blood, melting their face, becoming Darth UristMcAwesome?

I enjoyed reading my friend a combat log that started with the nail-biting tale of a mason caught in a terrible accident before abruptly becoming three pages of the poor bastard vomiting on himself.
