Desert Empire 2.0 (Community Fortress)
« on: November 27, 2011, 09:55:43 am »

Based off the book The Desert Spear this fort will be amazing. I've chosen a 6x6 embark in a desert with a river, other than that there is nothing.
Now this may sound like a pretty average place. Well, you'd be wrong. First things first, above ground fortress. Only thing that will be allowed underground is forges, underground tunnels, farm, and sewers. A 6x6 embark is rather large you may think, well we will be taking up half of the map with our fortress, and the other half with The Maze. The massive Maze will take the average sized embark up on its own. I have the Fortress Defense mod enabled for the Fun of it. The maze will have pressure plates, pits, ambush points and lots of blood! We will try our best to establish a clan system with clan houses and blood-lines.

There are a few castes we will have:
Sharum'Ka (Male Squad Leaders/Clan battle captains) Very high respect, requires AT LEAST 250 kills to be called such. As Sharum'Ka you will receive a Candy Spear and armor of your choice.
Sharum (Male Warriors: They fight, nothing else.) They get very high respect. If they die in battle they are given a golden sarcophagus in their home and are remembered with honor. If they die out of battle from disease or other non-fighting injury, they are thrown into a magma pit along with their firstborn son. If they do not have a firstborn son, then their daughter. If they do not have a daughter, then their wife. If they do no have a wife, then their pet. If they have none of these, they are dishonored enough already. If they earn no kills while they fight, they are also thrown into the magma. Each will be given a spear and armor and thrown into the maze. If they survive, they are to be treated like royalty.
Nie'sharum (Younger versions of Male Warriors) They are stripped from their family early on and forced into training. At this point I am still debating throwing children into a pit with Giant Desert Scorpions and seeing which ones survive, or just standard military training. They are not respected as they have not yet earned honor.
Khaffit (Male laborers: Crossbow making, engraving, cooking, mining, metalwork, jewelry, engineering) These will be treated with the least amount of respect possible as they are considered dishonorable. They are to live in shame and will not be given any luxuries.
Ting (Women workers have ALL the following labors enabled: Carpentry, Wood-cutting, every craft, hauling, masonry, every farm labor, every hunting labor except hunting) Also get very little respect
Dama'Ting (Women only, nurses essentially: All healthcare labors enabled, nothing else) These get high respect, they will be treated as a GOOD noble would. (as in NOT !!murdered!!)
Andrah (Male only: The leader of the city, king essentially)

I think that about covers everything. If you wish to have a character, post your name and what caste you wish to be. If you have any preferences (hair color, weight, thoughts) I will try my best to find those as well. Let me know if this sounds like a Fun idea, here we go!

It is the first of Granite, 121st year of our holiness Everam. We have finally arrived at our destination. I have decided to keep this journal to begin recording the history of our soon to be legendary accomplishments. We have stopped by a river to replenish our water stores, but our food is running low. In the river I can see many fish! Carp, milkfish, stingray, carp, hippos, carp, and some odd Platypus men creatures. We have brought along with us but one spear (None of us worthy to wield it, a tragic flaw in our planning) 4 dogs, 2 cats, 2 water buffalo, and 6 giant eagles that we attained from trading with an elven caravan on the long road here.. Well they weren't exactly willing to trade. Nor were they alive, so it all balances out somehow, Everam forgives. This land is flat and barren save a few trees and a small sand dune. We were treated so lowly at the 'Oh so glorious' Fort Krasia. We will have no such troubles here! We shall construct here a free land! We will have a maze twice as great as theirs and our families even stronger!.. Well that is until we grow so large we begin attracting the Sharum (Warriors) from Krasia and they decide we should be of the lowest rank once more... But hey, lets get started, we have great plans for this place!

It is the 22nd of Sandstone, year 121. Much progress has been made since my previous entry! The mining Khaffit (Laborers) dug a magnificent mine, and we used the stone to construct a massive wall around what will soon be our glorious empire. The wall is completed, ensuring our safety until we are able to engage them in combat. We have had two waves of immigrants from Krasia. Of them we received four Sharum (Warriors) and 13 Ting (Women workers). The head Sharum it seems is one named BranRhi, we will see how much honor he brings to his family. We dug deep and carefully, and struck a magma pipe very near the surface. We established our forge and now have a steady supply of iron being made into weapons. The farm is nearly ready to be flooded, but not quite yet. The market place has been outfitted with a trade depot and a well. I have plans to create a pattern made of silver in the sand surrounding it, to impress the Northerners who come to trade. Also, a few bridges allowing us to cross the river have been put down. The desert sands shift in our favor, Everam shines upon us in these early days, our glory is surely on the way!

We have had our first two attacks by the monsters. Some beakwolfs and dark stranglers came. They were easily dispatched by our four Sharum. Sharum BranRhi had his left arm dented in the first few seconds of combat, and a nameless Sharum has his hand injured as well. They will both recover soon, or they are to be sacrificed to Everam in holy fire. The basis for 10 out of the 12 clan houses has been set, along with their tunnels dug. All that is left now is to floor them, add a roof, and the clans will be decided. One warrior has already racked up 14 kills in combat, I am sure he will be written about in our history books. Sharum Remalle is his name, perhaps some day he will become Sharum'Ka, the leader of the warriors. Once the clan houses are finished, sewers dug, soldiers trained, and weapons stockpiled we may begin construction of the Holy Maze.

Killcount:
Remalle - 14 kills
Unclaimed Sharum - 5 kills
BranRhi - 2 kills
Unclaimed Sharum - 1 kill

Olin isn't fucking around this time. He knows it'll take more punishment than a BDSM expo in a tornado made out of serrated blades. So he hits it until the head is mush. Then he hits the body until it's got a soupy texture too. When he's done, it doesn't look like a cat. It looks like a fucking meat puddle.

We now have 10 men in the military, and have had no attacks since the last. We now have two of the clan houses completely floored, the farming industry up and running, and the tunnel system is complete. I have come to the conundrum of what material should our spears be made of? Should we only use iron? The men seem to want armor as well, but it is also up for debate. One Sharum claimed a workshop in a strange mood and he was demoted from his position of Sharum instantly. Khaffit, sons of camel piss work in the workshops. We received another wave of migrants bringing our population to 40 in total. 10 Sharum, 10 Khaffit, 17 Ting (Women laborers) and 3 Dama'Ting (Doctors). This land is beginning to take shape under our spear, soon we will have the honor of constructing the Holy Maze.

*DEBATE*
Spear Material
Armor: Yes or No?

Spears could be made of bronze, iron or steel. Unless you want to have the same spear on a warrior throughout the game (in which case give them steel), you could make spears into status symbols. I don't know about the lethality difference between bronze and iron, but a fledgling sharum should wield either copper (if we bother) or bronze/iron (whichever is worse). After 5/10/X kills, they get upgraded to bronze/iron (whichever is better). An arbitrary kill count later they will be awarded steel spears. Candy spears you already mentioned in the OP so that's covered.

I feel armour should be used to increase battlefield survival for a more entertaining game. Alternatively armour could be discarded for decreased battlefield survival for a more entertaining game. At least give them helmet, breastplate OR mailshirt and a shield. Any additional leg/arm protection is optional (or perhaps this too could be turned into a status symbol?). 0 kill sharums get the aforementioned minimum (or less). Upon spear upgrade the sharim in question would also receive boots/greaves/gauntlets.

I want to be a khaffit, no labour preference.

Everyone who has requested so has been dwarfed, you are all your requested class.
what is this monster's FPS?!?

also, if I can, please dorf me.
any job, preferably military.
I'm holding steady at around 55 fps, not bad actually. I imagine during several sieges and when I have gibs flying through the air and white tigermen being thrown into pits it will be a bit lower.

Spear's fine then.  I also like the idea of having spear material and armour be based on kill count, too.
