How exactly did a tribe of batmen get into the fort?  The magma breach?

I don't even want to know why you're breaking the seal on the Forgotten Beasts... :o

The batmen are in the caverns, not in the fort. Pretty much right below the FBs. And I wasn't planning on unsealing the FBs, I was planning on dropping the entire massive system they live in into the magma sea.

Part Four: Moody metalsmiths and missing magma

11th of Hematite, 103

Well, it would seem there is very little happening again. The workforce's current priorities revolve largely around re-building the vertical axle to provide power to the lower levels, and deconstructing whatever was used to flood the underworld. This leaves some people (Me, Mego, Eshtan) with very little work. So we've started excavating a large area, with no real reason yet.

12th of Hematite, 103

The elven merchants claim to be leving soon. I had forgotten they were even there. The door is still locked, though, so they won't have an easy time leaving. Also, I am told two more ghosts have been put to rest.

14th of Hematite, 103

Emptying the underworld will apparently be much easier than I thought. It's happening by itself.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Also, the quarry level is nearly comletely empty of magma.

16th of Hematite, 103

The elves claim they are leaving. I still see no way for them to do it.

19th of Hematite, 103

It would seem that out metalsmith has been taken by a mood. Unfortunately it appears we don't have a forge for him. I have ordered one built.

2nd of Malachite, 103

The moody metalsmith has claimed the foge I had built for him. Now he apparently needs fuel for his construction. I've ordered a wood furnace built.

Another rather uneventful month has passed. I feel my headache will soon be over if this keeps up.

Journal of Oliolli
Part Five: Migrants and mad merchants

8th of Malachite, 103

I'm getting a bit concerned about the metalsmith. We should have everything he wants, but he won't grab anything...

17th of Malachite, 103

The merchants realised they were trapped. Some of them went berserk, some stark raving mad.

21st of Malachite, 103

Migrants have arrived, again. A bowyer macedwarf, a metalcrafter and a surgeon.

1st of Galena, 103

Another month, another nearly empty journal, another ghost put to rest. All that is left of the elven merchants now is a melancholy yak bull. The moody smith is still not grabbing anything.

What, in order, is it asking for? And what does he currently have?

Try unlocking the elves and looting/unforbidding their stuff.  They don't need it anymore.

What, in order, is it asking for? And what does he currently have?

I'm not sure on the order. Based on him being a metalsmith in a forge, I'd say he wants to start with metal bars.

Bars... Metal... (metal bars)
Stone... Rock... (rocks)
Gems... Shining... (cut gems)
Rough... Color... (uncut gems)
Stone... Rock... (rocks)

Although it tends to start at Rough... Color...

He hasn't grabbed anything yet.

I've checked his preferences, he likes steel (which we have), Lapis Lazulis (which we don't have) and magnetite (of which I'm not sure, the stocks screen trying to count all the different rocks here murders my computer).

Try unlocking the elves and looting/unforbidding their stuff.  They don't need it anymore.

I figured I could do that. The problem is that the yak bull that remains is named, and I'm not sure if that would mean it's hostile.

The name's probably from it beating three kinds of crap out of the elf merchants.

Or beating up a berserk yak. Keep in mind, this is a melancholy yak we're talking about.

Maybe he want multiple gems/cut gems?

The fort has tons of gems, both cut and uncut.

He probably wants a specific type of metal.

Try melting a bunch of different things down, starting with candy in case he's in the mood to make a whip or something.

I want to tell you they were bad men, cephalo.  I want to tell you that with a better overseer the Fortress never would've gotten so bad someone would get offed in a pointless fisticuffs.
But the sad truth charlie?

Swordthunders is well stocked in metals. There should be everything available that it can produce. Also, shouldn't he be asking for his preferred metal if that were the problem? He likes steel and Swordthunders has steel bars.

Still having some issues with my eye, but hopefully by the time you get to me again it'll be healed.  (*crossfingers*).  So sure, throw me on the end of the list.
