Artifacts made from "steel" bars
« on: November 27, 2011, 12:21:15 am »

One of my dwarves got possessed, and claimed a magma forge. I forbid all the crappy materials and even butcher a jaguar for him, and what happens?

He grabs a steel bar, and somehow makes an iron weapon out of it?  ???

Now I need to build a magma pit just for him...

Well it IS called the random metal, maybe that had something to do with the seemingly random metal it was made of?

I should ask you if you made sure it was steel and not iron he was hauling to the workshop, but I'm more inclined to believe its name gave it magical properties. You're lucky it wasn't a nickel short sword.

And I bet you wish it had been adamantine.

I can't help but notice that it's also lacking a decoration in either steel or iron. Did you by any chance forbid the steel bar while the dwarf was constructing the artifact?

That's funny :) He grabbed nickel bars first, which nearly gave me a stroke. I forbid that nickel bar, so he went and grabbed another one. Then I went on a forbidding spree in the stock menu and made sure he had steel, or at least something heavy and valuable in case he made a blunt weapon.

So yeah, I made sure he had steel hauled to the workshop, and I didn't forbid steel.

Another strange detail is that he grabbed two mahogany logs, but none of them were consumed, and now are sitting in the forge.

I'm not sure, but I think this is an example of why you want to do your material forbidding before he claims the shop and starts selecting materials to work with.

If you forbid the base material for an artifact, the game picks something else instead. Since iron is the first material it comes across (it's the first entry in the first 'inorganic' text file), it uses that as the base material.

I am trying to make chickens lay bees as eggs. So far it only produces a single "Tame Small Creature" when a hen lays bees.
Honestly at the time, I didn't see what could go wrong with crowding 80 military Dwarves into a small room with a necromancer for the purpose of making bacon.

So if you wanted, you can reorganize your file so candy is on top to intentionally get certain weapons.

I guess that makes sense.

Btw, the next dwarf grabbed another steel bar and made a steel warhammer. Not bad  :D

Nah, steel's about as good as silver due to how strong it is.

According to the wiki, all six non-adamantine metals perform nearly identically for blunt weapons. That basically means that steel is good for everything, since any bonus/disadvantage that requires complicated testing to discover is not likely to have a noticeable effect on the game :)

Seeing as this warhammer will be wielded in a squad armed with nine additional silver warhammers, it'll work just fine :) I even bet that it'll work better.

Higher density is best for blunt weapons. Artefact slade warhammer ftw.

Armok, not again.

Density, while important, isn't the only thing that matters and testing indicates there's indeed no clear hierarchy between the regular materials - whether silver does better than steel seems to depend on who's twatting what with what (armour or not, size of the weapon relative to wielder).

Yes, slade would be great and platinum is better than the regular materials. But I'd take silver over lead any time, and this includes the making of blunt weapons: The slight increase in density isn't worth having the structural properties of cheese.

Silver packs more punch against softer targets / armor than steel. But a steel hammer won't constantly glance on a bronze colossus / steel equipped soldier.
