Dwarven McDonald!!!
« on: March 12, 2007, 05:39:00 am »

Hello!

Would somebody explain this to me? I have many lavish meals stored in barrels just near the great dining room, yet my dwarves prefer to eat a raw plump helmet while standing in the kitchen! Perhaps I should move my unprocessed food stores to someplace remote? And they have the nerve to complain about "lack of chairs" and "lack of dining tables"....

Well, you dwarves eat what they like. If they prefer Plump Helmet over lavish meals, then Plump Helmet it is.

Regarding your Dining Room, the first thing that comes to mind is that maybe it's inacessible. You may have locked the door(s) or  maybe have set up a statue so that your dwarves can't get in there. Windows, too, are impassable (I wanted to prevent cave adaptation by placing a few windows in the Dining Room, so every dwarf would get to see a ray of light every now and then. Just behind the door is *not* the right place).

You should also double-check wether you actually declared this to be a dining room. "But I'm sure I did..." Yeah, right. Happens to me all the time.

A matter of taste...

Yeah, I just checked. Some dwarves go to the room, take a lavish meal and eat it there. The plump helmet lovers grab their treat in the kitchen and eat it immediately. Too bad that I wanted to use the helmets just for brewing wine......

Toady has also stated that some dwarves will choose the cheapest meal they can when the economy is turned on. He was looking into whether this also occurred before the economy kicked off. There was also something related to whether barreled vs un-barreled food was preferred.
I don't know the results of his investigation(s).

Looks for fixes in new releases... however this *next* release will likely require a new world to be generated.

Does that actually work?  And where'd you put the windows lookout OUT to, anyway?  Anyplace left of the river is considered 'lit' and won't cause cave adaptation...  hmm, I wonder how that'll work now that the river isn't guarenteed?

I would guess by distance.  Either depth into the mountain or by shortest path to the outside (both make sense in different ways).

Search me. I started a new thread for this, noone seems to actually *know*, although there's no shortage of opinions.

All I can say is that
a) when I built my very first window, ever, it caused sun sickness although being deep in the mountain. (I can't recall how I found out that it was sunsickness. Probably something in the thoughts of my dwarves.)
b) four years into my current fortress with windows, there's no vomit nowhere.

One can imagine quite a few possible reasons, for why the dwarves don't get sick; I believe the windows at least play some role in this, but can't say for sure.
