You can use wooden training axes to cut down trees too, you know.  Unless you don't want to, of course.

I was about to post that, but it would have been ninja'd. I also figured it was a kind of personal choice thing.

EDIT: For the sake of not double posting:

OP, does the embark have a aquifer? I've been trying desperately to find a desert embark that doesn't have an aquifer... it's quite difficult.

No aquifer, you can edit the raws to remove them before or after world gen. To do it before, go to raw->objects->Open the inorganic_stone layer,inorganic_stone mineral, and inorganic_stone soil folders->Edit->Replace->Replace [AQUIFER] with (AQUIFER) and hit replace all. Repeat for all three. To do it for a world already genned, go to data->save->region#->raw->etc. I couldn't find one without aquifer either, if it has sand it has an aquifer sadly.

Had my first siege of about 10 dark stranglers, they were no match for my 3 wrestlers. Soon they will get their spears. My metal workshops are up, but I have no metals as of yet. I can see some exposed candy and I am considering going straight for it, but that would be too easy I think. After I get the clan houses and the individual homes set up the construction of the maze can begin. I suspect it will take hours just to design the pressure plates and pitfalls, with the timing and turns. I will add an underground tunnel system connecting the houses to a massive armory somewhere. I will also be putting in waterworks as well so each home can have a well, possibly a mist generator also. No death yet, just killed a few vultures, a troglodyte and the dark stranglers I mentioned earlier. I am currently working on the roof of the palace and the sewers.

Is all your housing underground? Or are you just making the maze portion above ground.

My housing is all above ground, all that I have underground right now is the farm, mine, metal industry and soon to be connecting tunnels. Above ground housing, stock piles, maze, dining, etc.

Despite everything going fantastically I may have made a grave mistake somewhere in world generation as it appears as though I have no metal. Literally none.. Hmph.

Amazing idea. I shall perhaps make a maze in my own fortress. (read: posting to watch)

I ought to do this, albeit according to a different book, or my own imagination. Maybe the Ranger's Apprentice series, but that requires the use of the bow and arrow, to neither of which dwarves have access to by default.

Well I fear this be the death of my empire before it began. I will start it again anew tomorrow, next time WITH ore. DFhack confirmed it, I have not a single ore. Not a single one. About six hours wasted, but what can I do? At least I hadn't started on the maze yet. I will keep you guys updated on the new fortress tomorrow after I get it properly genned and find a good location.

I've been having troubles since I removed aquifers... The gold and cassiterite veins were no larger than 3-5 units. Is this normal for you?

Normal? Not sure, my first time doing such a thing haha. It might mess up the whole thing, but I can't exactly have a beautiful world with an aquifer, now can I? I'll look into it and tell you what I find out.

I am a bit fuzzy on what a community fortress means exactly.
Beyond just telling the story of how the fort is doing, it means 'adopting' members of the community as dwarves in your fort. Each member gets a dwarf named after them, with some degree of specification of what kind of dwarf (e.g. "I want a swordsdwarf, preferably with red hair").

I've been having troubles since I removed aquifers... The gold and cassiterite veins were no larger than 3-5 units. Is this normal for you?
No, removing aquifers has nothing to do with that. What mineral scarcity setting have you made the world with?
