Desert Empire
« on: November 26, 2011, 07:43:55 pm »

I am reading a book called the Desert Spear which has given me the desire to make a fortress based off of it. In the book there is a stronghold in the desert where the men all fight in a giant maze against demons (I have Fortress Defense mod to simulate demons) and the men who don't fight are of very low status. It is a bit like Sparta, but in the desert. The Fun part I believe will be making the massive maze. I have a 7x7 flat desert embark with very little wood and a river. and I am setting up a massive wall right now for the city, later on the maze will be done with pressure plates, pits, and ambush points. The women in my fort are only to be stone workers or farmers. All of the other labor will be taken on by the lower caste males, who receive small houses and I will find other ways to disrespect them later. At a certain point I will kill all migrants so I can get a blood line system going with clans and families. The men who fight will only be given spears as weapons, I am still debating on armor other than clothing. This will take massive amounts of micromanaging to get started up, but I think it will be worth it. I've already hit magma in the first cavern 17 levels down, so metal working will soon be up. All males who fight will be given houses with statues and masterful bedrooms, possibly fountains in each house. If a man dies in battle his golden sarcophagus will be placed in his home (Seeing as it is impossible without intensive modding to build their clan houses out of their ancestors bones). If he dies of infection or another form of dishonorable death (Anything not combat related) he will be thrown into magma and so will his firstborn son. Is this something you guys would be interested in me updating? I am really excited to get this idea going as I've been looking forward to doing it. Let me know what you guys think!

NOTICE: This fort has been abandoned due to a world gen error that I did not notice to begin with. I am redoing it and you can have a dwarf named after you and follow along and whatnot. http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=96918.0

It'd be interesting to see how you handle this. I dig it.

What if he doesn't get a son before he dies?

I hadn't thought of that..I could kill his wife then. Same if he dies of old age, that is considered dishonorable as well.

So do all of the elderly fighters just end up offing themselves to prevent a dishonorable death, then?

Surviving long enough against demons that a warrior can die of old age? And how is that dishonorable?
Love the idea, are you going to make a community fortress?

I do think that if a dwarf achieves legendary in many skills before dying of old age, that should be honorable. Dying of old age because he was too cowardly to fight is one thing, but dying of old age because nothing in the maze could kill you is another.

And how are you going to train children? I know the book has a way, but my way would be to let them grow up as children in a walled-in section of fort with plump helmets and dwarven wine dropped in from above, and small, vicious creatures (read: badgers or a capturable desert-dwelling creature) are dropped in - the children have to survive until they grow to 12, at which point they get equipped with bronze breastplates and helms, leather leggings, gloves and cloak.

The way I imagine this place being is unless you die in battle you are not granted access into their heaven. So as of now it is impossible for one dwarf to have multiple wives correct? I am a bit fuzzy on what a community fortress means exactly. Is that where you talk about your fortress and update it? If that is the case, I will have to move this to that section, wont I? Training children...Hmm.. I like the idea of throwing them into a pit for Fun, I may have to look into that. Sadly, my desert lacks badgers but it seems to have copious amounts of Giant Desert Scorpions... I like where this is going.

Hell yeah, this looks sweet! ...And any child who manages to go toe-to-toe with a Giant Desert Scorpion and live shall be a god amongst dwarves, truly!

On the ides of every month place a child in a three by three room and release a wild animal inside. If they kill the animal they gain honor and return to their lives, if they fail send in another child.

Again, I know you're going by the book, but would be cool to have 'bands' of kids - say every baby born in a year will go into the same band - the maze will be a giant designated barrack, so the soldiers will find a place to train with their friends in their spare time. Dump in food in a whole bunch of random places so they'll have to stay on the move.

I've been inspired to try this, with the exception of perhaps not having a maze or anything like that.

The farm is finally up and running, a few of the workers had begun hunting vermin instead of working. The great wall spanning half of the map is finally complete, and a palace is under way. Metal industry is almost completed as well. Everything is going fantastically, but I realized I forgot to bring a battleaxe, so the 15 logs I brought will have to do for now. Traders just came, sadly they had no battleaxes either, so I just traded some rock crafts for a bit of leather which will serve as armor in the coming waves of enemies.
