So, have you guys seen Outerra?

I'll let it speak for itself...

It isn't a game

It is a toy, there is sort of a difference.

No problem. It is allowed here

I am just saying that for anyone who comes in expecting this to be a game and then goes on a tangent going "I am so going to take over the USA! in this game" when really you don't... do anything in the game.

Well the title does say "simulationist" and doesn't actually reference a game anywhere, to be fair... (Although I guess it is in the "Other Games" section?)

And from the videos, it looks fascinating.

Simcity, Simearth, Simlife, The Sims, Mars Colony, Creatures, Life and Death...

Simulation is a genre of videogames and the title of this section of the board is "Other Games"

My excitement for powerful toys such as these wanes when I sort of realise that no one really takes these and goes "You know what, this could be used to make a really great game". Or when they do it turns out to be somewhat lack luster. (DANG IT SPORE!)

Edit addition: DANG IT don't die topic. I didn't mean to kill you. People usually just ignore me.

I'm definitely interested in seeing if a company makes a game with this. Could be pretty epic.

You're mistaken.

Outerra is an engine, not a toy. Its target audience is game and software developers, not consumers.

I'd be interested in seeing an Oblivion/Fallout type of game using this engine. An entire world open up to exploration, no invisible barriers to stop you from leaving arbitrary borders.

Randomly generated high-scale graphics games go.

This is definitely a step in the right direction for random generation games of this day and age, considering so many people are obsessed with the aspect of graphics (I don't see what's so overly important about how the game looks).

I don't care about graphics but it wouldn't hurt to play in a realistic enviroment.

PTTG gestures.
The thread shudders and begins to move!

I just got the preorder for Anteworld, the game being built in the outerra engine. I've really enjoyed what I've seen so far.

The ideas that have been put forward for actual content are also quite interesting. They suggest a colony ship returning to earth to find it abandoned. The players then rebuild.

I myself would prefer something like a massive solar flare and following chaos destroying most of the world, so when the game starts with you emerging from the bunker a decade or two later, you can see the plants emerging from the rubble of great cities and find old landmarks falling to disuse. You then rebuild using more conventional stuff, not magic sci-fi tech.

Alternatively, it would be really neat to have a Total Annihilation type RTS set on a whole earth map, too.

It looks pretty interesting, but there's only so much you can do with city building and driving vehicles in a single-player setting.

They seem to be taking a massively single-player approach. It will pollinate the world with things other players have built and uploaded.
