The Siege of Bookpeak

The fortress had once been a nice place, not the greatest dwarven fortress but still a good one.  It had halls and dining rooms, barracks, workshops,everything it needed.  Now everything it has is not enough.  The fortress has come under siege by a large force, one that even the greatest fortress would be challenged by.  As the overseer,  you will need to survive until the next season, when help from the mountainhomes will arrive.  You recall the about the fortress...

What was its name?

What was its greatest asset against the invaders?  A large military, good fortifications, a large collection of exotic animals, or something else?

Most importantly, what species is the fortress under attack by? Goblins, elves, humans, enemy dwarves, or some other species?

Call the Fortress: "Lobsterblade" where all of the weapons have lobsters on them!
We have teh best military, and were being attacked by the tree huggen hippies!

The Fortress was called Bookpeak, after those strange paper engravings the humans made- It was filled with peaceful gardens where one could ponder life's mysteries, and beautiful engravings.

Its greatest asset against the invaders would have had to be the long bridge leading to its grand entrance, which in times of war could be readily defended by only a handful of marksdwarves in the guard towers.

But will it be enough, when the undead forces of Sarvesh Cagewall, the once-great, once kind Queen of the mountainhomes now cruelly transformed into a vicious vampire came? A skilled swordsdwarf in life, Sarvesh's turning only made her and her rotting followers more powerful...

Ah, now you remember, Bookpeak was its name.  It's a beautiful place, with gardens and farms providing all the food the fortress needs and the unique architecture, stunning all the visitors that came to it.  All the craftspeople were skilled, thanks to the knowledge recorded by the engravings and those strange human tomes, found only in your fortress.  Most of that will sadly not help in your war, as Sarvesh and her foul armies will burn it the ground, and so much knowledge will be lost.  You will have to rely on tactics, and Bookpeak is home to some of the greatest tacticians in the entire Eternal Picks.  Your armies consists mostly of marksdwarves, to take advantage of the grand bridge that leads to the fortress' only entrance.  The marksdwarves are not the most skilled, as war is rarely studied or talked about at Bookpeak,  but you are sure they will learn quickly.  Now, you should begin thinking about how to prepare for the coming assault.

You send a scout to investigate the enemy forces, and he does not return.  You go to the workshops and order some mechanisms and levers to be constructed.  They should be done next turn.  Nothing else of note happens.

You rolled a 3 on the scout, so you'll get a +1 bonus to them coming back next turn.  You also rolled a one on random events, and I was having higher numbers= random events, so nothing happened.

Set up barriers on the bridge to better funnel enemies into it. Set up ballista using the wood found in the fort and aim them at the bridge for a precautionary measure. Prepare some bats of boiling alcohol to pour over the invaders as they funnel into the fort. Give two crossbow dwarves torches to throw on the enemy as they pass underneath. Finally, recruit a militia and melt down any metal remaining in the fort after the ballista are made to make some spears. Set them up in front of the Axemen at the base of the bridge inside the fort in a defensive hedgehog formation.

Also, get our most charismatic dwarf to deliver a speech to our brave warriors on the merits of not dying. Preferably he must have an exceptionally long beard.

This. Also convert our gardens into farms for some of our more alcoholic crops. Plump Helmets anyone?

We could use the fermented plump helmets as fuel for our boiling vats of !FUN!!!!

...Also, Phalanx or Testudo formation sounds nicer ;P

(5+1) The scout returns late, warning you that an ambush is coming to attack the fort.  They should arrive next turn, and there are about 40 soldiers in the ambush.  Sarvesh's main force has around 120 zombies and 40 vampires in it.  You notify the military, and order all civilians inside their burrows, except for the ones helping you prepare the defenses.  Speaking of defenses, you should start on building some.  You order barriers to set up on the bridge to increase the tactical advantage it provides, and some alcohol to be set aside to burn the enemies with (-5 alcohol).  You also have some ballista set up near the bridge .There's no need to farm more plump helmets- you already produce lots of them.  Still, you figure a bit more of the garden could be creating them(+.5 alcohol production) .

Additionally, you have most of your healthy, dwarves who are not valuable to the fort join the militia.  You melt down useless trade goods to be made into iron and copper equipment for the dwarves.  Bookpeak has small mines, so you do not have access to steel.  You make sure to order them to form a defensive formation inside the fort's entrance. (1) You give them a long speech on not dying, but you are only a dabbling comedian and not a leader, so you decide to try some jokes instead.  You have a feeling it didn't really motivate them.  Maybe you shouldn't have mentioned that Sarvesh's forces outnumber them  4 to one.  Finally, you give two marksdwarves torches to throw at the enemies. 
The battle will start next turn.  If there are any last minute preparations you would like to make not is the time.
