corpses from butchers to refuse, then back again
« on: March 11, 2007, 10:12:00 pm »

One dwarf will carry a tiger corpse to the butchers shop, then another will pick it up imeadiately and carry it to the refuse pile. This cycle goes back and forth for a while until a butcher is close enough to get into the shop before the corpse gets taken away. What's the deal?

Your butcher probably gets distracted before butchering.  Check to see if he is wandering off for food, drink, sleep, or just going on break.

In this case the corpse is no longer flagged as in use and instantly gets tagged as refuse to be hauled away.

The larger the corpse the higher the probability it will take forever to get there and the dwarf will be tired/hungry/thirsty before butchering.

This is also why I would like the ability to distinguish between rotten and butcherable corpses in the refuse pile.

Set a butcherable corpse pile next to the butcher's and disable butcherables from the refuse would eliminate this little problem and improve efficiency.

In order to be butchered, the corpse has to be on a refuse pile. For all I know it might suffice if it was somewhere in the fortress, but I've never seen that: dead meat in the fortress usually is claimed by a refuse hauler immediately.

What makes hunters hunt is not killing animals (soldiers could do this just as well, or any old dwarf in self-defense). No, what distinguishes a hunter is that the kill will be picked up and carried to the butcher's. From there it's usually taken to the refuse pile before a butcher comes around... but that's just a miner imperfection. By taking it to the butcher's, the meat is in the cycle and will hopefully be processed ere it rots.

Soldiers will only kill the beasts and let them lie. In order to insert them into the queue, you can designate a refuse pile under the corpse. Ordering your dwarfs to gather outside refuse ought to have the same effect, but... I never tried this, but I'd guess they won't only collect butcherable corpses, but dead vermin as well. There's *lots* of vermin outside.

Temporarily put a stockpile under it (with everything disabled).  A butcher will then run out and grab it for butchering.

Gathering outside refuse is usually a bad idea as a dwarf will spend a lot of time running out to collect a dead bug.  This does keep your workforce employed (sometimes a good thing, sometimes bad), but they often get killed by some wildlife.
