I really liked how Asheron's Call divided up the races of man.  A Black-type, White-type, and an Yellow-type.  Beats me about what they called them.

Wow. Just.... wow. Aren't there terms that sound slightly less horribly racist?  :o
Anyway, that idea makes sense for a mod, multiple civs of each race with cultural variants. It'd be worth testing.

I like how Tolkien has the races.

What makes elfs different from humans is that elfs don't die of old age. Elfs were around much earlier than humans which makes them way more rich in culture.

Elfs aren't susceptible to disease
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
, while humans are, and have a chance of dieing to it. However elfs can die of sword just like humans and other creatures.

In physical abilities elfs and humans are almost equal, but because humans live only a short time their "candle" burns out more furiously.
So the humans are bit more physical.

Humans breed a lot faster than elves.

That's why I like DF elves more. All the races aren't more or less civilized/cultured than each other, they just branched off in different ways. Elves chose to protect forests and eat sentients, Humans chose to focus on industry, and Dwarves chose to REALLY focus on industry. And you know what Goblins focus on. There's no sense of superiority in the races, it's really a sense of survival meets clash of the ethics.

I don't like how in B12 elves are always downgraded to hippies. Elves should be something equal to humans and dorfs

Are hippies immortal? Do they eat your children? I think not :P

Do you mean that in Tolkien's setting elves are too perfect?

In essence, yes.

I agree with you. They don't belong in a video game as they are in the books. But still I don't think they shouldn't fight back when you sacrifice their traders and diplomats.

Perhaps they could send their army of badgers to spread a horrible disease among the dorfs.

How else do you think badgers inexplicably know where to attack? :S

Yup. I think of it as that they're all adapting to different roles and environments in an evolutionary manner, instead of picking a "hat" stereotype, and this is more realistic and believable.

Humans breed a lot faster than elves.

Dwarfie,  you know this on who's authority?  *smile*  I'd be interested in knowing birth rates, between the major civ races.  Legacy mode has so much birth info, something should be able to be compiled, somehow.

I thought Elfs grew on maple trees, like Canadians.

If Elves grew on trees, it would make sense as to why they don't eat plants but they're fine with eating sentients :P

They're like a mirror image... So alike yet completely reversed.

You know, you gotta trust the wiki!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elf_(Middle-earth)

"and by their first hundred years of life outside the womb all Elves are fully grown"
"Elves have few children, as a rule (Fëanor and Nerdanel were an exception, conceiving seven sons), and there are relatively sizeable intervals between each child "
