You need to crank out copper armour and weapons anyway so as not to waste steel making inferior quality steel weapons and armour. Plus all the tetrahedrite gives you the silver you need for those warhammers. Sometimes, though all you can find is bloody cassiterite...

I usually train my metalsmiths with blue stuff. Using Dwarven Physics you can melt all non-masterwork items back down to be re-used with no penalty.

EEK!

Melting only gives you a fraction of your metal back D:

You've been losing adamantine.... Unless you were melting individual bolts, that's different.

I zinc this thread could use some ore metal puns. If more people would forge puns, that would be golden.

Life (in dwarf fortress) is a cocophany of flavours, each more succulent than the last - why not sample them all?!

Everything rushed in DF will and invariably go horribly wrong. Coincidentally, everything planned will also invariably go horribly wrong.

The only things that don't go wrong in Dwarf Fortress are things that will go horribly wrong sometime in the near future.

Unless you were melting individual bolts, that's different.

And to get individual bolts he'd have to shoot them first, thus presumably losing the vast majority of them in the first place. I think furniture gives back the whole bar that went into it, but melting weapons and armor is wasteful.
