Is the seize goods feature working as intended?
« on: November 25, 2011, 09:22:39 am »

For punishing embarks, seizing goods from caravans looks mighty tempting. From reading the wiki and the forums though, it seems that this function isn't exactly very logical. Enemy civs will continue to send caravans regardless of you robbing them blind (albeit less lucrative caravans due to the loss of profit)? They *may* declare war if their caravans die over and over?

Anyways if this is how Toady intends things then hey what the hell, but it seems a bit off.

I suspect that, like many things, it's a placeholder until Toady gets around to developing something that makes a bit more sense...

I guess it has really small reputation penalty right now. Though even seizing goods could start war if you would kill  enough elves before.

I believe that when seizing the caravans after a couple seasons of robbing them blindly they will declare war upon your civilization. But every so often isn't really that bad. I tend to seize caravans in the first two to four years , just to make sure supplies last. But I also Offer marked goods to them later on like for instance a couple masterwork Roasted Longland Flour worth *45000 dwarf bucks is a fair trade for treachery.

Think of it this way;

Broker sets off, with trade goods in tow.

Returns empty handed, robbed of all exports. Would you immediately go to war? No, that's costly and politically a nightmare. You'd try to find a diplomatic solution, and trade would continue. Eventually the cost lost in trade out weighs the cost of war (and the angry brokers would get very annoying), and the elves/humans mobilise!

Plus, it means new players and young fort's aren't heavily punished for accidentally seizing that xX<<*Rope Reed sock*>>Xx

Eventually. Or it will at least make them lean more to the option of going to war with you.

Generally seize only as a last resort. Or if you just really hate <insert race here>.

after year 2 you should have enough products you want to get rid of, like 60 *rope reed fiber rope*, a whole host of bone crafts and totems, probably some goblinite and spare food (year 3: both cooks reach legendary+5, nowhere to store their creations, waiting for human caravan. -time passes- human caravan ran into gobbo ambush and turned back. Lets donate to the elves next time)

There is no option "Yes, the feature is working as intended, but the feature is a placeholder and the feature needs further tweaking from Toady"

I sieze stuff when elves and humans are being dicks demanding a 3k profit over and above the good profit they're already getting, and stuff like that.
