Project Ocean Pyramid
« on: November 24, 2011, 04:39:36 pm »

Inspired by this thread by The One And Only Joseph.
http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=96551.0

I had embarked on the beach of a frozen ocean far to the north, mostly for the novelty of it.  Was going through the forums when I found the above thread talking about making a pyramid and covering it with water.  Well, for some reason that appealed to me, so when I found out that the ocean was liquid for two months of the year, I decided to try it.

Phase 1 had me digging out some of the ocean and planning for a wall around the area to keep water out.

Phase 2 continued with the digging until I finally was able to put in the wall to keep out the water.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Phase 3 came after the realization that ocean squares inside a water-tight wall still generate water.  I had never seen a wave go through a wall before that.  That set me back about six months in-game, but 8 miners are better than 3 in fixing a problem like that.

Here's a picture of phase 4, where I have mined out the ocean tiles straight to the basalt bedrock and placed a partial roof over the box.

At this point, I was planning a 15z high pyramid, so i cheated a bit and used dfreveal to check out what was below my project.  Sad to say, I'm going to have to cut it down to 9z height if I want to keep it as all stone and not constructed.  As it is, here is the top of what I will dig out.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Since the pyramid was not going to be as high as I would like, I felt that I could make up for it by having my dwarves smooth and etch everything from the level I'm starting at all the way down to the base as I dig.  On a whim I threw 4 obelisks into the planning, having them at each corner of the pyramid.  Also, copper statues on the obelisks and pyramid top (and maybe down the four corners).
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I've been finding basalt, copper and vast layers of obsidian (no magma close to the surface :().  My pyramid will be 4 levels of basalt on top of 5 levels of obsidian.  It'll be nice once I get it finished.  Bedtime for now, since I have to be at work by 2am.  Black Friday and all that.  I'll work on the project more after work.

I approve wholeheartedly.

I just woke up in a daze.  Copper floors.  My pyramid demands copper floors once I dig it out for the tombs.  And basalt statues inside.  It must be etched out completely inside and out.  The first floor must be a maze.  There must be a dark tower presiding over the site once the waters rush in, with a switch at the top that cannot be reached, a switch that controls the door to the pyramid.  The tower MUST be crafted of obsidian.  ToadyOne needs to let us create electric traps powered by rooms full of zinc pillars and sea water that act as a simple battery, attached to copper floors that can electrify anything that tries to walk on it.

Done.  Sleep takes me once more.  Hope I remember posting this.

Posts and ideas made in a daze are always the best ones.

Is this pyramid built from ice?
And you can move over electrified floor by jumping on one leg or keeping feet together and making really little steps.  :D

Note: Please don't take advice like this. Duder's probably not an expert on circumventing electrified floors.

Though, rubber boots would work. Rubber doesn't conduct electricity. Just check if there's no holes in them...

Okay, it's actually starting to take shape.  The first level of the pitwall is now engraved, the copper statues are situated, and the obelisks and pyramid are just starting to take shape.  Stonevision turn on!
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

And I've started digging out the next level down.  The obelisks are smoothed and etched at the top now.  Quick question: Should I make the pyramid a step pyramid(Aztec-style) or a sloped pyramid(Egyptian-style)?
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Been forgetting to tell you guys anything about Boardedirons (name of the fort).  It's from the Boots of Owning (local Dwarven govt) of the Oil of Realms (home civ).  I've already fended off a single attack from a titan called Hode Buquinihde, Swamp Titan.  "A giant feathered jackal.  He stumbles about uncontrollably.  Beware his fire!"  Got some nice swamp titan leather for the price of 4 dwarves.  Live and learn, eh?  Also, my etchers have just started to carve some slightly disturbing images.  Two carvings of forgotten beasts and one of purring maggots.  Anything I should be worried about?   ;)

Assuming my fortress survives past making the pyramid (130+ happy dwarves in 4 years, what the bleep am I doing wrong???), I was originally thinking of just expanding the fort.  However, your question got me to thinking.  How about this: following the Egyptian theme, I construct a 100 z-level hollow obelisk made of constructed ice walls and filled with

Force ALL of your dwarves to be friends with one dwarf (who will invariably become mayor), and (optionally...?) kill all who make grudges against the now, DEAR LEADER HA HA HA HA HA.

Then put that dwarf in the obelisk, and fill with magma! That way, the obelisk will affect the mood of ALL of your dwarves, making them all slightly... Berserk.

Well, just now got around to posting an update.  Boardedirons is now a bustling metropolis of 175 dwarves (including 8 children and 4 babies).  I've decided to let it become a barony for some reason that now escapes me, so wish me luck with the baroness.  Now, as for the pyramid, I've got another pic for you guys.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

As you can see, I decided on a step pyramid so it can be engraved from top to bottom, inside and out.  Felt it would be more dorfy that way.  Well, wish me luck on finishing this thing.  So far, I haven't gotten any invasions or ambushes at all.  Must be because I'm on an island or something.  Couldn't tell from all the ice this far north.  I'll try to update a bit more frequently, but the holidays had me hopping at work.
