(Ah. I was going by the ME universe where the migrant fleet is only a few centuries old.)
"I've lived most of my life on Illium," Samane answered. "It's a very hectic place, and very, um, corporate. Almost everything is arranged by contracts and businesses. Even me." She smiled wistfully. "My mother, Alece T'Edrina, actually met my father through hiring him on to, well, be a father. She wanted a strong-willed daughter, so she hired a Krogan warlord, Ashgho of clan Dath, based on his reputation as a mercenary. I don't think they counted on developing feelings for each other." She took a drink of her wine. "I don't know if it's love, exactly, but Ashgho stopped by our apartment as often as he could to make sure I knew how to handle myself as a warrior. I'm not sure if that was part of his contract, or if it's Krogan culture, or if he was just trying to look out for his daughter."
The whole thing confused her at times. "I got to go with him a few times, on quieter contracts like security work or patrols. He taught me practically everything I know about weapons and biotics, and, well... I wanted to be like him, so I joined a military academy as soon as I was old enough to leave home. Illium is a lovely place, but I wanted to see the rest of the galaxy and do exciting things with my life while I'm young enough to enjoy it." She smiled at Wash. "Maybe if we're lucky we'll make a stop at Illium, and you can see if for yourself. I'll have to warn you not to sign anything, though. Some of the less scrupulous businesses are quick to get 'indentured servants' that way."
