Sam laughed. "I think many of us are new to the ship. If I had had a decent shuttle pilot myself you would probably be in my shoes." She grinned. "But I don't think you would find heels very comfortable, so it's probably for the best." I sure don't... they do help you learn how to keep your balance, though... "I just graduated from the academy, so this is all still new to me. Have you served with the IA long?" she asked.

"I see. I'm sure we'll both do well," Sam said reassuringly. "Here, let me get you a drink." She fixed Wash one from an appropriate bottle - catering had provided a lot for Turians and Quarians, so it didn't take long for her to find it - and handed him the glass. "Not many Quarians choose to serve in the IA," she observed, pouring some wine for herself. "It's a shame, because going by their reputation they are the best engineers and technicians in the universe. It's reassuring to have a pair on the crew."

Odd, that. Exactly one male and female Quarian. "Have you met Miss vas Qwib Qwib yet?" she asked, curious.

"Oh yes," said Wash, placing a sterilized drinking tube into the glass. "We shared the same room last night."

He paused.

"Erm, not that way, of course. We're colleagues. Besides, I just met her, and, um..."

Just shut up, you bosh'tet!, he thought to himself.

"Thank you for the drink."

"Oh, I'm sorry. I didn't mean to embarrass you," Sam said with a giggle. "It makes sense for the two of you to share a room; Quarians have the same need for a clean space, and the same foods and drinks, so I should have known beforehand. And even if you did mean in the other sense, that's all right too. I wouldn't hold it against you." Not that she could without being a hypocrite anyway, considering her own circumstances. She took a drink and studied Wash; like many people in the galaxy, she found Quarians oddly intriguing. Probably because they were so shrouded in mystery; they were always in binding suits out of necessity, and their visors were tinted to hide their faces. She felt it was a shame she hadn't been born about six or seven hundred years ago, before they needed to wear them. Of course, then she would be a Matriarch and probably sequestered away somewhere to 'dispense wisdom' to the rest of the Asari race.

"I've been monopolizing the conversation. Do you want to ask me anything?" she offered.

Fun fact: The Quarians often fill engineering roles on Ssaros ships. They can also serve in ground roles with Quarian-Adapted Power Armor. Some even consider them the Ssaros-Quarian Alliance.

BTW the Exodus by the Ssaros was them fleeing their old systems, due to a massive Antaran fleet. Nearly 1000 years later, they returned and fought the Antarans head on. That is part of the reason why Ssaros and Quarians are so cordial.

"Well, what was life like on the Asari worlds? Who were your parents?"

The Flotilla was almost never allowed to visit Asari space, so Wash was quite curious about them.

(Ah. I was going by the ME universe where the migrant fleet is only a few centuries old.)

"I've lived most of my life on Illium," Samane answered. "It's a very hectic place, and very, um, corporate. Almost everything is arranged by contracts and businesses. Even me." She smiled wistfully. "My mother, Alece T'Edrina, actually met my father through hiring him on to, well, be a father. She wanted a strong-willed daughter, so she hired a Krogan warlord, Ashgho of clan Dath, based on his reputation as a mercenary. I don't think they counted on developing feelings for each other." She took a drink of her wine. "I don't know if it's love, exactly, but Ashgho stopped by our apartment as often as he could to make sure I knew how to handle myself as a warrior. I'm not sure if that was part of his contract, or if it's Krogan culture, or if he was just trying to look out for his daughter."

The whole thing confused her at times. "I got to go with him a few times, on quieter contracts like security work or patrols. He taught me practically everything I know about weapons and biotics, and, well... I wanted to be like him, so I joined a military academy as soon as I was old enough to leave home. Illium is a lovely place, but I wanted to see the rest of the galaxy and do exciting things with my life while I'm young enough to enjoy it." She smiled at Wash. "Maybe if we're lucky we'll make a stop at Illium, and you can see if for yourself. I'll have to warn you not to sign anything, though. Some of the less scrupulous businesses are quick to get 'indentured servants' that way."

Jack Divers lay in his quarters. The door was locked. The book he was reading...well, something in the back of his mind told him he didn't want anybody to know about it.

Its cover was bare, except for one symbol. A circle with eight spikes equidistant around it. Inside the circle was an eye, and Jack could swear it was watching him.

Inside it contained information, knowledge that he could never have imagined before. He had been one of the followers of the Imperial Truth, that there were no gods, that the only truth was science, for some time. But this book....well, it was convincing him otherwise. The four gods was true, he knew that. In a small section of his quarters lay a shrine to the one he followed the ideals of the most, Khorne, God of Honour and War. He felt the others were too idealistic, especially Slaanesh. One could not live in an eternity of pleasure. Men needed war to grow, to thrive. And Khorne knew that. Nurgle was next, because they represented the two sides of humanity needed to grow, enduring of pain and ceaseless war.

He went over to the shrine, and made the daily sacrifice, as he had done ever since he had started reading. He took his knife and cut his hand, letting the blood drop into the shrine. Even as he watched, the blood hissed and evaporated as it landed. He bowed and prayed to Khorne for the opportunity to prove himself.

((So was I.  :P ))

"I guess there are worse types of parentage. It sounds to me like it worked out quite well in your case, regardless of the reasoning behind it. If nothing else, I'm sure your father had some interesting stories." He sipped from his own glass. "My mother and father were both life support technicians. It's one of those boring-yet-vital jobs in every society. I think they were actually relieved when I decided to follow my own path rather than take up after them."

"I would love to see Ilium some time. We were warned not to go there alone due to just those rumors, but that shouldn't be a problem if we visit." He nodded a couple of times, one of the best ways for a quarian to show agreement. "I'm actually pretty excited. An IA vessel can go to all sorts of places that wouldn't allow pure Quarian ships."

"Well, despite their lack of scruples, I don't think ANY corporation on Illium would try to steal military personnel. It would be bad for business, at the very least. The scandal would be outrageous." Wash noted that Quarian ships weren't allowed everywhere, and Samane nodded sympathetically. "It's terrible, yes. I don't really understand why. I mean, I know there are prejudices to consider, but let's be honest: are any of those really deserved?" As far as she knew, Quarians were indeed gypsies, roaming from galaxy to galaxy, but that hardly made them thieves or worse. "My friend Tilana has a Quarian father, Shua'kegu nar Rayya vas Harvester. I've met him once when my father took on a mission to protect the freighter as it made its rounds. I was really young then, about three or four years old, so I don't remember much."

She took a drink. "He was really nice and knowledgeable about machines. He was pretty busy though; the Harvester was in pretty bad shape for a human vessel and he was almost always working on something. Probably the FTL drive in retrospect." She meant the story as an illustration of her own experiences with Quarians, but it led to a question. "Do Quarians often leave the migrant fleet?"

BTW the idea was that the Quarians are still part of the Migrant fleet, but it's under Ssaros Protection. The Exodus was before the Quarians made the Geth.

"Well, to be honest, in the earliest days of the Migrant Fleet, my people would show up and basically demand supplies. This was shortly after the Geth uprising, so we still had some sympathy. We kinda threw that away; we weren't expecting to be wandering for so long."

He listened to Samane's story and question. "It's...not uncommon. There's the Pilgrimage, which I'm sure Tilana or Shua told you about. That can take years, and not all of them choose to or can get back. Sometimes entire ships will leave for a time, often to gather or buy some resource. And of course there's our relationship with the IA. For post-Pilgrimage individuals to leave, it usually implies an important mission or criminal behavior."

((So how far ahead is this from the ME storyline?))

((Also, going to bed. 4 am here D: ))

There was a knock on the door, and Jack hastily hid the knife and the book, and moved to the door. As he opened it, he noticed his XO standing there.

"What is it?"
