Sam looked around to see what many of her crewmates had chosen as formal wear; she knew a little of other cultures, but it was still fascinating to see it first-hand. Huh. I didn't realize father's people HAD formal wear, she thought, glancing over to Dakka. Then again, she rarely saw her father since he was still employed as a mercenary and was rarely able to make the trip home... which reminded her, she had to send her parents an e-mail later to check up. I wonder what Batarians consider formal wear. She hadn't caught a glimpse of Sai'oda yet.

It's a title given to the FNG for ceremonial dinners.

It's something done as a tradition in the IA. A similar thing happens in the Australian Army Cadets, and the actual ADF.

Leaving James's side for the moment, Sam approached a Quarian who looked a little lost. "Hello, I'm Samane T'Alece," she said, offering her hand.

The Asari looked almost as nervous as he was. She seemed young even by the standards of humans or quarians.

"Hello. I'm Wash'Kora vas Iktomi. Friends call me Wash."

He shook her hand.

"Have you been with the ship long?"

"Pleased to meet you, Wash," Sam said. He asked her if she had been with the ship long, and she shook her head. "I was just transferred in to fill the sniper position. I think there was a mix-up or something; I should've been with the ship since it first set off." She made a sort of off-hand gesture that said everything about the bureaucracy. "It seems it's a tradition for the newest member of a ship to act as the host - or hostess - for gatherings." Sam smiled. "Is there anything I can help you with?"

"Nothing, really," said Wash. "It seems you beat me for 'newest member' status by less than a day; I just joined up myself. Shuttle pilot."

He shrugged. "Go figure, I believe, is the human expression."
