What do you think the maximum ages should be?
« on: November 23, 2011, 09:43:25 pm »

Hello there!

I was looking through the RAWs and found the max ages on the different major races.

Dwaves-150/170
Humans-60/120
Kobolds-150/170
Goblins-none
Elves-none

I thought these ages were interesting and decided to share them with you.

What do you guys think the maximum ages should be.

I'm surprised kobolds even live that long. I imagine them living a shorter lifespan than humans... say, 30-60 years.

Man, an extremely skilled and lucky kobold that was never caught could build up quite a hoard over his lifetime.

I'm rather surprised at the kobold ages. I thought they'd have lifespans more like D&D goblins, with 30 being considered a grand old age. Maybe it's because DF kobolds and the goblins from Goblins have a lot in common, excepting kobold kleptomania.

I am trying to make chickens lay bees as eggs. So far it only produces a single "Tame Small Creature" when a hen lays bees.
Honestly at the time, I didn't see what could go wrong with crowding 80 military Dwarves into a small room with a necromancer for the purpose of making bacon.

I know, I'm survived, too.

I agree. It seems like kobolds should have a shorter lifespan, living off the scraps (or legendary artifacts) of other societies isn't usually condusive long life.

What about goblins? Their lack of age really sticks in my craw.

The thing about kobolds is... they're not very intelligent, and not extremely social either. So really, from a naturalistic point of view, there's no incentive for them to be long-lived.

The gobbo's should have a slightly shorter age than humans, like 50/70. I imagine them being headstrong young warlike hooligans, not wise old men.

Well their max ages don't mean much when they have a tendency to die from outside causes...

I believe the justification for goblins that live forever is the same as them not having to eat - something that exclusively dies in hordes while fighting relentlessly is a lot more frightening than something that can starve to death or die of old age.

There was a FotF post somewhere that said something like that, I think.

Oh, no, I like this thread, I was just pointing it out.
I do agree that kobolds living for so long is a tad odd, though, especially because DF kobolds are kind of mammalian.

Goblins not having to eat is very unusual. Their ethics say they should be eating sapients.

They don't have to eat; that doesn't imply that they don't eat.

I believe that tag is a placeholder anyway. Compare that to how kobolds all go extinct within a couple of years unless you mod them not to eat. The mechanics regarding worldgen survival of carnivorous races don't seem fully fleshed out yet.
