I'll take General Price.  For the guns er, I mean Missouri!

Sure you two, I ran a bunch of turns yesterday. Not much happened but a few brigade level skirmishes. 1862 will be the beginning, no major battles.

Price has fought several delaying battles against a Union force, been reinforced and now General Sibley with his Texas Rangers are helping raid Missouri :D

I'll take a supply train. Preferably one that is at great risk of being captured and putting the campaign in jeopardy through no fault of my own. (Someone has to, right?)  :P

Ok we will be the Union in a full campaign.

It is March 1862, Ulysses S. Grant is sieging Hickman Kentucky. Grant has shown himself a valued leader and has over 10,000 men in his command. In the west, things have gone well, Union forces have made slow but steady progress against the confederates in Kentucky, and now a large contingent commanded by Confederate General Leonidas Polk is besieged inside the town of Hickman by our Generals Freemont and Grant.

Leadership both east and west is improving, General Freemont will soon create the first US army group in the west, and General Mcdowell commands in the east.

We shall focus on the west however, and Grants army.

So far the command goes:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Reinforcements are comming by rail of siege guns to help take out the forts along the Mississipi. Also I will transfer about 20 cannon from wherever I can to assist this.
Grants armys goal - Push down the Mississipi into west Tennesee while General Hallecks 3 divisions drive the confederates from east Tennesee.

Reports from the east say that we are making steady progress, but after a small and bloody siege, Confederate general Beauregard took Fort Monroe and thus captured the James peninsular. It looks like they must enter Virginia directly now.
Stonewall Jackson and Joseph Johnston have been terrorising the Shenendoah valley, but when 3 Union corps came down on them they withdrew inside Strasberg depot Virginia. Unless a masive confederate force comes, they will eventually have to surrender to the Union, hurrah!

Current position:

Currently we have no supply cart yet, so whoever wanted that XD will have to wait abit :D

Oh, and if you look to the east of Grants army, you can see Nathan Bedford Forrest has made his appearance :(.

For those who dont know who that is, of why we should be scared-

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nathan_Bedford_Forrest#Fort_Pillow

Despite not being a professional soldier, despite being crude and unsophisticated, He became one of the greatest commanders on the Confederate side of the war. By the end of the war he commanded the entire Confederate army in the west.

I think we should own him. Bay12 style.

///NEWSFLASH///

Late March

Grants troops, and us bay12ers, storm the town of Hickman, and find token resistance, it appears Polk had withdrawn long ago. -.-
However the people in all their wisdom are holding Grant in high regard after this battle, he is to be promoted to 3 star general.

*additional, Since Grant is getting promoted, and Freemont is a useless shit - I'm going to put Grant in command of the western armies next turn.

A. S. Johnston has defeated Halleck at Gallatin, Kentucky, despite having an inferior force. He then swung behind our lines and took Bowling green. I'm going to send Grant to fight A. S. Johnston, Halleck is useless.

A small update

In the east...

On a foggy morning the Union troops surveyed the besieged town of Strassberg, Virginia. As the fog cleared out came a Confederate line of infantry that proceeded to browbeat the besiegers, routing them at every chance. Joseph E. Johnston and Stonewall Jackson have escaped the siege, and live to fight another day, and kill more yankees :(

A massive battle around the same time occured when 4 Corps of infantry marched towards Fredericksburg from the west, despite a superb effort from our men we couldnt drive them from the town. Special note to the United States Marines. Spotsylvania was their first battle of the war, and they allowed 1 Corps from the North under General Benjamin Butler to flank the Confederate forces by a river crossing. We lost 7779 men, the confederates lost 5412. This is (probably) the most bloody battle in American history to this date.

In the west...

Grant arrived to kick Albert Sidney Johnston out of Kentucky, only to find he had already vacated Bolwling green and moved south over the Tenessee river to Nashville. Grant was denied his victory and the Confederate force now have a good defensive position and are reinforcing, I fear a very large battle in Tennesee soon. Unless Grant can lure the Confederates out of Nashville that is.

Thats all for now folks! all in all, a bad few turns for us XD. Jackson is on the warpath again, and A.S. Johnston evaded Grants army. And there I was thinking this was easy so far... pfft.

*On the good side, Kentucky is ours, and Grant has taken overall command of all forces in Kentucky and Tennessee.

Ok time to continue the meatgrinder!

July 1862
Grant's army crosses the river in order to capture Bowling green. Grants spies report A. S. Johnston south at Nashville, however the Confederate line that met Grant outside of Bowling Green suggested otherwise. After a short skirmish Grants troops withdraw back over the river, and talk of the treasonous words of Grants intelligence officers.
However no Union men died, and some Confederate cavalry made a unintelligent charge and over 600 lost their lives trying to retreat back to their lines.

Reports from the east indicate that the Union has won a great victory at the battle of Hanover Virginia. General Irvin McDowell is said to have attacked Confederate General Longstreet, whom finding himself on the wrong side of a river after the previous battle, was set to by 52,000 brave Union men.
With only 12,000 men, Longstreet was unable to resist our forces and withdrew to Richmond to reform.

Albert Sydney Johnston remains an annoyance to Grant, he cut behind Union lines in Kentucky and managed to capture some artillery meant for Grants army to use for his own wicked means.
The Army of the Tennesee has however been caught off guard, and will have to take the defensive. If A.S. Johnston wants to escape Grants army, he will have to withdraw fast.

Back in the west...

In the Shenendoah valley an army under Nathanial P. Banks defeated Joseph E. Johnston and Stonewall jackson at Strassberg(yes again), this time it is a undeniable union victory, over 3800 rebels killed for 1000 of ours. Banks took 900 rebel prisoners, hurrah!

But as Victory resides everywhere..... disaster in the west!

The battle of Bowling Green, June 7th 1862

Grants army took up defenses on the south of A. S. Johnstons army in kentucky, Johnston having placed himself behind Union lines and Grant having dug in in favorable positions.
The Union soldiers rest and recuperate after long marchest through kentucky from Tennesee, set up defensive positions and pickets. However scouts report A. S. Johnstons army isnt going to wait, they are fording the river as the reports came in and crossing to attack Grants superior army!
Both sides frantically make battle lines, the Confederates preparing to assault and the Union preparing to defend. The Confederates then begin to march forward under artillery support. 30,000 men attack the Union lines of the same number, and after fierce hand to hand combats, the battlefield being taken and lost several times, the Union units are driven from the field.
This is now the bloodiest battle of the war, we lost 6000 men, they lost 7000 and A. S. Johnston scores another victory against the Union.

Random battle, Union soldiers poorly led attempted a unadvisable assault on Island number 10 fort, over 8000 were killed or wounded :/ The Nation is stunned by the idiocy of the Commander, Danial Butterfield.

Good news, General George H. Thomas of Grants army and Kearny of Banks' have been promoted due to recent actions on the field.

Also the Confederacy agrees to a prisoner exchange next week. A small blessing.

Late July

General John Pope captures fort Henry & Donnelson, hurrah! the Mississipi is open.

In the east...

Banks is defeated by J. E. Johnston after  blundering across a river in pursuit of him. Sigh.

In the west...

Union General Don Carlos Buell has flanked behind Confederate lines and is assaulting Nashville, Tennesee. A. S. Johnston's army is seen to withdraw from Kentucky to relieve Nashville, hopefully for good this time.

Random note, McClellan is angered that I promoted Kearny rather than him, Lincoln sends him a telegram
