It's just kind of hard to figure anything out when people say "In my country [...]" without specifying.
I never had that problem actually :P

Well, yeah, I would guess, but my telepathy doesn't work over TCP/IP.

I found that switching to broad band fixes that.

I have cable internet access. Must be the ISP blocking that port, or something.

Near as I can tell, what you are describing is a credit union.
Well it's not local at all (they have branches all over the country), which everyone else seems to be saying is a property of credit unions.

I use a bank regional to the US south east, I guess you could say it is mid sized and it is fair for running a checking account, but the terms on loans are really bad. I can get an auto loan from my bank at ~18% interest or one from the local credit union for ~3% interest.

That sounds awesome but I get the feeling I'd get slapped if I suggested it to a date here.

They must think injustice absurd; above all, they must think it startling. They must retain the violence of a virgin astonishment. When the pessimist looks at any infamy, it is to him, after all, only a repetition of the infamy of existence. But the optimist sees injustice as something discordant and unexpected, and it stings him into action.

18% WTF? That's like theft. I'm now in my parents' banks, but as soon as I get a real income (so still 3-4 years to wait) I'll move it to a credit union (Well, they call it "Solidarity Bank" over here, but the principle is the same. They also only invest your money in "ethical" companies (So no huge mutlinational, oil corporations, arms factories or Israeli colonies).

It really depends on what grounds you are with your date.

A lot of the time even in Canada the idea is that if your trying to advance on a woman your supposed to pay for the date (as your gifting them for their affection. Thus getting them to pay makes it less of a affection bribe)... Unless your already going out in which case you can start to go Dutch. Note that this applies even to Feminists (as there is no unified feminist agenda or teaching).

As for Banks. Currently my money is in a bank.

Mind you Banks tend to be evil to people who have less money and leniant to people who have a lot. They have been known to use some pretty cheap tactics here in Canada.

Do remember that "local" is relative. If you live in, say, Denmark, even if you had them all over the country it would still be local, because it's a very tiny place. ;)

But actually, local is just normal for credit Unions simply because of how they work, it's not really a requirement and some can get quite large - if you're country is a little bit more supportive of them, I could easily see them getting national reach.

I love my credit union. The fees, if any, are next to nil (the worst fee I've ever had was a consistent 1 dollar a month out of my savings and checkings accounts). Plus they go out of their way to help me when I need it.
