Stuck after building workshop
« on: May 11, 2008, 12:56:00 pm »

v0.27.176.38c

during my last game I Noticed one of my dwarfs saying he had no stone while in a mason's workshop.  There was a stockpile a dozen tiles away but he didn't seem to want to travel.

After re-starting, the issue remained.  After my Miner finished building a Mason's workshop he froze in place, flashing the symbols for hungry and thirsty, listed as idle and refusing to leave the shop to fetch stone required for assigned tasks.

I could only free him by dismantling the workshop, which he was happy to do, but rebuilding it (at least three times) in the same spot left him stuck each time.  I replaced the space with a gem pile and rebuild elsewhere, and things were normal.

I don't know if it's related, but there were a few other little things going on at the same time - other jobs and workshops not being completed, (my building designer staying idle, no one hauling items)

Each workshop has a few tiles that cannot be walked through. When building the workshop, these tiles show as dark green Xs, whereas the walkable ones are green Xs. You just put walls around the workshop such that once it was completed, there was no way in or out.

Did you build the workshop into a 3x3 room, or into a tight corner?
AFAIK the lighter tiles on the "floor plan" (when you uild the workshop) say "this tile needs access from outside", i.e. a floor tile next to it.

[Derakon beat me to it, and I think his explanation is more correct :-]

I build all my workshops in a 3x3 room with a one-tile doorway in or out.

The doorway was, in this case...The D below, I believe.  I've since re-installed but I could try repeating the conditions, see what happens.

Yeah, Derakon was right then, it's not a bug. According to the wiki the layout of the mason's shop is like so:

XXB
BXB
XXX

with 'B' equaling the blocked areas, just try putting the door by one of the others and you should be fine.

Yeah, I too have had this problem.  Before you start placing your workshops, just make sure you know which tiles are blocked access, or alternately, build them in the middle of a 5x5 room to avoid all path-finding problems.

You shouldn't know it, you SEE it.

Well it's not like there's anything in the game itself that specifically says that the dark green parts are blocked, I did this in one of my first fortresses too and from what I've seen on these boards it's a pretty common newbie mistake.
