Dwarf conscription is very thorough
« on: November 19, 2011, 03:16:24 pm »

I just discovered that one of the children in my fort has 3 xp in armor use.  Does anyone have any idea how that happened?

In cluttered close quarters the vermin will bite each other and anything near them.  My guess, his clothing absorbed a nibble.  Not sure, just a hunch.

They do if they were immigrants - it's only the locally born children that are always naked.

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

Fascinating.

I wonder if that's intentional. You know. Travel clothes?

While it's perfectly realistic that they don't get born wearing clothes, them not wearing clothes you produce or import is what's bugged/unintentional* about this whole situation. And this is regardless of age, as in, it's as true for native children that never wore clothes in the first place as it is for dwarves whose clothes deteriorated after arriving at your fortress.

*Or more precisely, I seem to recall that this feature got disabled to reduce damage caused by a certain bug (possibly claiming ridiculous amounts of clothes).

Really? ... I never noticed this. Dwarves always replace their torn clothes and throw the rags in their closet in my forts.

Except for blind dwarves. Blind dwarves have serious problems with clothes! ... and just because I just said that I decided to check my game with 8 blind people. They used to run around barefoot and lacking many clothing articles but .. they've gone into the export stockpile and pillaged socks, shoes, gloves, caps and pants .. who are worth between 4-800 dorfbucks a piece.
Most of the closets are filled with quality clothes. Some rags.. but it all works perfectly fine. They replace their gear and their shoplifting, while annoying, doesn't cause me any stress. Except that a certain civilian Urist has claimed a candy robe for personal use. I need to do something about that!

On a topic-related note: One of the immigrant children is wearing clothes and he is a armor user, figher, wrestler, striker and dodger. I am not sure when he got into a fight but ... there you go.

Are you playing .28, by any chance? In .31 they don't generally equip clothes on their own. You can assign clothes as uniforms but that won't work for miners, woodcutter, and hunters.

Also, and don't take this the wrong way, please go easy on the ellipses.

Civilian dwarves will claim clothes to replace worn ones, and store those clothes in their rooms if they have them, but will never actually put them on.
