Ehh, I can't be expected to keep track of who says what. It wouldn't be that great of an advantage to you until late-game though, IMO.

Well the realistic way of breaking apart power blocs was to make a bigger rival bloc and attack the old one. And always remember, that guy you're teaming up with? He could be planning to betray you right now! You should betray him first!

Another solution: you could simply say that alliances have to have a stated reason to exist ie. "protect against France" or "attack Austria" or "helping the Byzies survive against the Ottomans" or whatever. Using the alliance for anything other than the stated purpose is disallowed. Of course the AI can do whatever it wants, but it breaks alliances so often it's not all that relevant.

That's what happened in the last game. Me(Burgundy) and France allied, so Austria/Poland/Denmark allied, so we added Castille to our alliance. We never got to fight (mainly because Domenique never turned up the session we were due to attack), and even though I could've backstabbed France ridiculously easily when they went over infamy limits, I never did. Because that would've weakened me if Poland/Austria ever attacked. Maybe if we had defeated the eastern bloc ours would've broken down, but I doubt it.

When people in a bloc are the same size, they both stand to lose massively if the bloc dissolves, since there will be other blocs waiting to snap up the remains.

Nobody is any nation yet. I'll divvy up the nations on Saturday night properly, to ensure that we get an even spread and all the majors get filled. If I gave everyone their first choice we'd have about a billion nations in eastern europe and two in western europe...

I will be taking a major nation, by the way. It stands to be Austria, Burgundy or England. I'll try not to screw over people too badly. This is my reward for hosting and admining

Ah, of course. If the Mediterranean looks too crowded, I'm happy to have the TO. I've never tried them before, but the AI seems to do okay with them in my games.

I actually removed Hansa from my list as i never play a trading nation so I doubt I'll do very well as them. I'm also willing to play Castille if needed.

So? If you attacked France, what's the worst thing that can happen? Austria DoW's and takes a province? An uncored, wrong culture unlawful Imperial territory that it may or may not even have access to? Why would it want to do that when it could be expanding into Italy with those delicious universities? Poland and Denmark have other problems but if they're human-led they should be perfectly content to continue a phony war with you. And this is assuming all of them are player-run. An AI-led Denmark will land a huge stack in a province and try to siege it while the stack attritions away. Just wipe it out a few months later. Poland wouldn't ask for military access, you'd never see its armies before it white peaces out. So that just leaves Austria. An AI Austria should be pretty easy to bribe off with 25 ducats at the first hint of trouble. Heck, just do the usual way to kill AI stacks. Let the siege stack attrition away, move your armies away so it assaults, then go in for the kill. Now if they're the emperor... you may have trouble. You're probably better off just gobbling up the Low Countries to gain strength.

Or the more fun alternative way to end the alliance, actually duke it out. Or even worse, ally with the other side and gang up on France. Sure it sucks for France, but then he shouldn't of gone over the infamy limit. Or try to convince Poland to join up with you and flank Austria. Maybe it's just me, but every time I play a strategy game of any sort online, there's always one chucklefuck willing to backstab his alliance for the stupidest of reasons.
