Elf's wood lobby
« on: May 10, 2008, 11:05:00 am »

Once elf diplomat came to me and asked to stop my barbaric slaughter of trees. I agreed to cap of 50 trees, just to see what happens next. Year passed, only 40 trees turned into nice barrels and bins, and, hurray!, elfs came. Long caravan full of... logs.
Does it intended? Those logs are sort of "kosher" or "killed in humane way" trees?
Elf also usually sell a lot of wood things, and becomes angry as you want to sell such ones to them, I used to it, but this time it just too outrageous! Reminded me of the American politicians.

"Those logs are sort of "kosher" or "killed in humane way" trees?"

It is one of the mysteries of the Elves... that only Toady can really answer.

I always had the mystical idea that they could whisper to the trees to give them wood... but there are a few other methods such as:

1) They could turn fallen twigs and branches and dead trees into logs
and
2) They could require a ritual
and
3) They themselves could believe are worthy of cutting trees
and
4) Perhaps only certain trees are "Right to use" in their mind... some sort of scientific or philosophical determination of use

It isn't a bug it is intentional... afterall Elves carry Wooden equipment

I don't think we will find out until the Elf Stage (which is after V1) or until Toady tells us...

I like the fact that we don't know yet.  It helps us understand why the dwarves are so exasperated with those darned elves.  It doesn't really need to make sense until elves are supported as a player race.

Maybe they are from naturally dead trees?  And there was a plague or something that killed a forest?

Who knows!?

Whatever you do, don't sell Eleven wood items back to them.  They get upset.

The elven caravans are always target practice for my ballistae; the diplomat, when he dares show his pointed ears inside my fortress, becomes my personal pincushion. It is the only way to deal with such an unreasonable people.

Anyone experimented with how much you have to offer them as gifts each year to make up for the diplomats always getting into "accidents"?  5000pa?  10000pa? 50000pa?

If all it takes to maintain a balance between "unlimited treefelling" and "not being ambushed by stupid pointy eared bowmen" is one stonecrafter churning full time, then I'm up for it.

Dammit, when I saw this thread I thought it meant you'd constructed an elaborate wooden lobby to meet elven diplomats in, with floor, furniture, etc all made out of solid wood.  To make them feel more at home, don't you know...

While I'm tempted to say that the elves just want to keep you from cutting wood so they can sell it to you, I think Toady mentioned somewhere that they'll have some sort of "kosher" way of producing it.  Of course, the selling of things back to them is odd...  Maybe when elves are elaborated on and magic is more defined, there will be some sort of marker for elvenwood items that says that they're 'still alive' or the like.  It would be neat if elvenwood items slowly repaired themselves, too (since the wood is still alive!)

Of course, if you buy lumber from the elves and do anything with it, well, you'd kinda be killing it...  so it's a bit odd that they'd sell it to you...

They probably think you're just going to put them in certain areas around the fortress to liven the place up a bit, and to let dwarves marvel at their natural beauty.

Either that, or they think you're trying to set up a treegarden with the cuttings.  Elves can be dreadfully naïve at times.

Elf Diplomat: How about... five trees this year. Wold that be good?
Dwarf Leader: What?! How will our people sleep? You don't expect us to sleep on stone floors all the time!
Elf Diplomat: No Mr. Bond, I expect you to di-Oh, um... I mean... How about ten trees?

That's easy, can't you see!

Elves don't have metal/stone mining ability. But what do they have? Huge forests of trees. A lot of small funny critters around.
So they kill these critters, fell these trees to have some kind of trade and embark to the nearest dwarven fortress.
Then they come to you trying to sell these damned logs and what do they have for them? Other wood? WTF! We have full forest of this shit! Take it back! We'd better head to another fortress and sell our shit for their precious gems!

P.S. About the main thread theme. They just wanted to sell you as much lumber as they could. So they tried to keep you away from cutting trees just to sell you more and profit!

I've never even heard of anyone getting attacked by the elves anymore, I can't really test it myself because I get unacceptably low framerates with enough dwarves to get the baron (or whoever triggers diplomats and thus quotas).

If you decide to chop with wild abandon year after year and DO get sieged, please let me know because I'm interested in seeing if elven or human sieges still show up.

I would bet for the simplest solution: The elves like just to limit, not ban all the wood cutting. So, this wont't prevent them from harvesting a small number of lumber as well.
