Help Protect the Internet!
« on: November 17, 2011, 11:34:03 pm »

wow I'm starting a serious topic never thought that would happen, here we go

I love the internet, you love the internet, we all love the internet. That is why we need to help stop the US government from breaking it.

"This bill would establish a system for taking down websites that the Justice Department determines to be dedicated to copyright infringment. The DoJ or the copyright owner would be able to commence a legal action against any site they deem to have "only limited purpose or use other than infringement," and the DoJ would be allowed to demand that search engines, social networking sites and domain name services block access to the targeted site. It would also make unauthorized web streaming of copyrighted content a felony with a possible penalty up to five years in prison. This bill combines two separate Senate bills -- S.968 and S.978 -- into one big House bill. "(summery from open congress)

Now I am horrible at explaining things but look at the two website below who explain this way better then I do.

Honestly if this is the bill I am thinking of...

When I first heard about it over a year ago I thought it was a joke that would get turned down immediately.

Apperantly not...

Censorship is already pretty bad in America as it is without this... Better yet it is another measure disguising itself as anti-piracy.

I mean it wasn't that long ago that America actually removed the law that circumvented Free Speach provisions on Copyright (basically there was previously a law that says that WHILE you can use CD and DVD footage for certain purposes: Education, Parody, Satire, Blaw... It was illegal to actually crack it to get the footage off it.)

Why is there such a stupid back and forth?

Yeah, this seems to come back practically every year. I've already signed the petitions again, and if the bill gets to the point where Obama has to veto it, I'll probably be scraping together the money to travel to D.C.  to protest. As of the last vote, though, the divide was a fairly even split, so I think we can hope that there won't be a supermajority.

God damn entertainment industry. Curse them all to hell. They're an outdated relic of a dead age.

I hope that all of this this blows up in their face, and makes people realize that they can get things that are just as good or better, legitimately, from people who willingly distribute their work cheaply or for free and don't waste all their money on things like marketing campaigns featuring rave "reviews" from nonexistent or bribed critics or recording everything on ye olde photographic filmstock.

The next time you feel tempted to go out to a movie, buy a CD, or sign up for your cable company's premium package, or buy a new videogame for your console go to one of these websites instead:

The bill could reasonably shut these forums down if I read it right.

At least as far as making it much more annoying to find it and sueing Tarn.

Sent a letter to my congressman already.  I really hope this doesn't go through.

But if it does, I'd like to be prepared.  If I read this correctly, the bill will only cut a site out of the American DNS system, right?  So, using Firefox and a fairly mundane knowledge of computer-fu, how do I obtain the IP address for websites I frequently visit and would prefer to not be cut off from (like Bay12)?

I expect that in case of any problems with bay12games.com/bay12forums.com domains if the site is still reachable by ip - it would be operational within half an hour.

If you really want to manually get low-level ip information - enter "nslookup bay12forums.com 8.8.8.8" into a console (most likely CMD). When DNS censorship goes into full swing it may include Google public DNS server above. MAFIAAfire will likely not bend to any DNS blocking rules.

It will be considerably more tricky once The Great Firewall of US starts to log IP addresses you access and issue "three strikes" tickets for contacts with IPs on a government blacklist. It may be still far away today but the direction of movement points there.

I have a nagging suspicion that this crap is among one of the primary reasons our country's going broke in the first place. They're so busy protecting the corporations' asses, they're forgetting how much money they're wasting on crappy music and movies nobody will be willing to pay for anyway. Protecting and producing them.

Also:

Just because it's relevant and funny.
I also liked the message behind this. What are they hiding? Why upkeep such a double-standard with our country?

EDIT:↓
I only brought it back up for reference. Fixed it. :P

Honestly they need to go back and make things LESS illegal and censored... not the other way around.

For example videos of people signing songs should be, in my mind at least, perfectly legal... if they arn't selling anything.

As well they need to make provisions for social networking and database sites.
