Animal Traps not being built!

I am perplexed, I have 2 carpenters who will sit idly by for 2 seasons and not build these things. They have no other responsibilities other than this, but it appears this is a challenge to them. This is important because I have to continue to see my food being eaten by rats. Any way to solve this?

Animal traps are actually built by someone with the trapping skill enabled, not carpentry.

Cats are a much more efficient way to get rid of vermin, I've only ever used animal traps when I want something exotic for the zoo.

That may be so, but cats leave behind remains that can rot in inappropriate locations of the fort.  Trapping vermin can keep otherwise useless dwarves busy, put food in your stockpile (dwarves will happily eat trapped vermin), and keep your halls clean.

And animal traps can give the dwarves pets.

While we're arguing the merits of traps vs. cats in the bugreports forum, I'll note that the bad thoughts from being in miasma are universally less bad than the bad thoughts from being accosted by vermin. And you can employ those useless dwarves hauling the vermin remains to an outdoor refuse stockpile, where they won't generate miasma. In their spare time, they can learn to farm. Or hunt.
