On Break
« on: November 17, 2011, 12:02:05 am »

Dwarven caravan arrives as usual, I request my trader at the depot. Trader finishes smelting ores and decides to take a drink. Alright, fair enough. When he finishes drinking, he goes on break. Well, this is a little annoying, I'll check back later then. Time passes, and I see he's sleeping. When he wakes up, he takes another break. So I wait.

And wait.

And wait...

"The merchants from Tetothsibrek will be leaving soon."

Take your time, Ral. No hurry.

"The merchants from Tetothsibrek have embarked on their journey"

Seriously? I didn't know it was even possible for dwarves to be this incompetant.

I just let anyone trade. The broker's appraisal skill is only really necessary for viewing item values, and you'll probably have enough junk crafts and clothing lying around that merchants end up becoming garbage haulers anyway, so the increased profit they demand from low-skill dealers isn't much of a problem.

I have purposely killed Dwarves for their incompetence regarding this matter. They just never learn, I have taken all their jobs away including hauling, locked them out of the fort and I have even tried building construction rooms not unlike that "Gun Runners" Booth from fallout new vegas. You know, the whole "Build the booth around the merchant depot" trick that involves Floodgate locking and supplying enough food/booze for Urist McTrader next to the Depot and only releasing him when the merchants arrive.

"Trader requested at depot" should make the bastard drop everything, including that rum and beeline it to the depot.

My trader finally decides he's been on break long enough. He's now getting some more booze.

edit: Walking 10 steps and lifting a lead barrel was enough work this week, he decides to go on break again.

Designating a Burrow around your Trade Depot and assigning your broker to it usually helps. If you get some job cancellation spam (Destination Inaccessible or something like that), try un-assigning your broker long enough for him to finish lugging whatever he's carrying, & then re-assigning him again.

Remember to let him out of the Burrow when you're done trading.

I made him my baron when the merchants came. Are barons always On Break?

edit: He manages work orders, so he's not completely useless.

If my broker views the short span of time that the merchants are here as the perfect time for a little R&R, then they simply get replaced. They're normally not the only ones in the fort with the appraisal skill, so if they can't take some time out of their busy schedule of being a lazy bastard, they simply won't have the job.

Burrow him to the trade depot. That'll work.
The next broker, anyway... Make this one fight whatever comes your way next... Alone. *laughs evilly*
*clears throat, regains composure* That's what I would do, anyway.
