I don't see it being the only exception to the rule applied to wharves and every other noun ending in F...
Oh yes, yet another word to spell correctly:

Nonono, it's not that comic by itself that is ironic.

It's that he says "don't intentionally miscommunicate and then think you're clever" whereas in the other comic the whole point is "my new hobby: cleverly miscommunicating with effect and affect."

Don't you understand?  It's made of people!  I mean irony!

Also, I am offended at the demeaning term "Gobbish".  It is a relic of a passed age of bigotry towards those of green skin, and it is a clear representation of the ignorance inherent in those who can not see past the warts.  The correct term is "Goblinesque".

Hello everybody, I'm back.

That's something I as wondering... Which is correct, humans or humen?
The latter should be the good one, but it just doesn't look correct.

1 - Hat Guy: Communicating badly then acting smug when you're misunderstood is not cleverness.

2 - MY HOBBY: Using the more obscure meanings of "affect" and "effect" to try to trip up amateur grammar nazis.

"Using the more obscure meanings of 'affect' and 'effect'" doesn't fall under "communicating badly".

I was about the say the same thing.  In the first example ("-gry"), the first person is aggressively being ambiguous.  In the second one ("effect foreign policy"), the second person is aggressively being ignorant.

I personally use affect and effect's alternate meanings to considerable degree.  My spiky hair is an affect for girls, and I effect plans all the time.

Wtf 1337 haxorz. %)
Da spelling iz s@xx.

Seriously, I'm not an english speaker and I can make a lot of errors sometimes (generally in consecutio tempores), but it hurts even me if someone was too lazy to type a right word of the right length -).

And

quote:
Dwarves I always use it, but shouldn't it technically be dwarfs...?

quote:
You are wrong, proper English should be dwarfs. Dwarves is a word coined by Tolkien.

Shelf - shelves
Scarf - scarves

Why "dwarfs" then? Who supposed this and why?

And everyone says "elves" not "elfs" too.

Traditionally, the plural of dwarf was "dwarfs", especially when referring to actual humans with dwarfism, but ever since J. R. R. Tolkien used dwarves in his fantasy novel The Hobbit, the subsequent The Lord of the Rings (often published in three volumes), and the posthumously published The Silmarillion, the plural forms "dwarfs" has been replaced by "dwarves".

Skipped the middle part of the thread, but:

Not a correction so much as a personal convention.

Dwarfish - Having characteristics of dwarves.
Dwarvish - Of the dwarves, or of dwarven creation.

So one could describe baby clothes as dwarfish because they are small, but clothes made by or possibly for dwarves are "dwarvish".
