Author Topic: Approximately how long would it take to kill every megabeast in a large world?  (Read 3556 times)

My peasant turned legendary hero is pretty much nigh invulnerable now, and I'm wondering if I should take the time to slowly kill every megabeast in my Large Region before sending him off to a suitably grand death so I can 'reincarnate' him into a heavily modded DF world. Having to trek all the way to the lair, return to report the death and get another quest is getting quite boring.

Also, what would be a suitably grand end for him? I'm thinking opening up a funhouse with upright weapon, and if he survives he will throw himself into the depths, hoping to be brought to the world he desires.

You dont have to return to where you got the quest. Just any nearby village will do. And i am sure that any law-giver will give you a megabeast quest.

Kill the beasts in different ways. Throwing corpses of your latest victims maybe? Inefficient but this is dwarf fortress.

I just want to see the world be brought out of the Age of Myth, is this even possible in Adventure Mode?

And no, I have to return to the law-giver to be given another megabeast location, and I've been to several human civs, he's pretty much the only ruler left alive.

I'm actually on the same quest at the moment, I am going to slay all of the megabeasts by myself, the porblem is that my world is in the year 777 at the moment (neat huh), and 98% of the fortresses are abandoned, i found only a few lords willing to give me quests, and appereantly i killed all of the megabeasts on this continent (no fortresses in the other continents as far as i know), also how to get to the underworld?

Depends, is there one land mass? If there isn't you're going to have do a lot of swimming.

Law-givers? Ask about sites. You'll be told where the megabeasts are. It also depends on how many megabeasts there are, how lucky you are, how fast you kill them, etc.

I would assume it would take a while.

Uh, sort of, if I remember correctly. I think once you fill the conditions for the name of the age to change, you have to play in Fortress Mode for a bit to get the change to register, but I'm not sure.

It doesn't need pics, it needs a wiki link.

http://df.magmawiki.com/index.php/DF2010:Calendar#Ages

Those are the aknowledged ages and their prerequisites.

It's ridiculously difficult to actually change them in gameplay post-40d, what with bogeymen being a prime concern and combat, material interraction, and even the speed adventurers travel at having been changed. It takes ages to change the age of the world. And it's very rare for the world to ever leave the Age of Myth during world generation, because megabeasts, titans, or night creatures are very rarely killed during world gen since around the time DF2010 was realeased.

I would guess it will take you more than 24 hours of straight game time to kill them all. And even more time doing legends, mapping, and population file research to locate the megabeasts that civilized people wouldn't know about or care to mention to you. Sometimes the game goofs and decides not to spawn a creature properly, on top of all of this, so you might not even be able to get all of them.

That's my problem, apparently- that's happening when a beast isn't in it's lair? I was hoping that it will return if I wait for it, it didn't. And I don't get more quests from that hamlet until I kill that particular beast... damn, I hoped it just went out shopping and I could catch it someday.

Yeah, anything on islands is probably the thing you're never going to reach. You can march over mountains, but if you try to swim to an island you're probably going to run out of endurance and drown.

Yup. In fact, unless your fortress is a very popular site for wandering megas, in's the only way to advance the age once you start play.
