My bookkeeper is not legendary enough...
« on: January 08, 2008, 05:31:00 am »

As you can see on this image, I have quite a lot of rocks in my fortress. And it's far from the end of it, since my miners are still mining exploratory shafts to find ores...

I used to check this screen to know exactly how many ores I have and how many I should queue in the manager screen. It seems now that there is so many rocks to count in that menu that the game take several seconds (easily up to about fifteen) to count, and there is so many the game don't even show me the listing!

I'd suggest, beyond the bug, that rocks and economical stones (or at least ores) should be sorted in different submenus...

btw, I think it's the Bookkeeper you should be talking about if it is the item count issue, not the broker.

Yup, you're right... My leader hold all those functions, so I always mix them up.

Nope, it's on the setting just lower than max and I don't think it's the problem here. Just by selecting the stones menu, the game lag to no end while it's counting everything. This alone is not a good behavior...

Well, the lag I can confirm, though it's not necessarily a bug but just a performance issue with too many items. However, that the items are not listed is due to the precision setting. At least that's in my experience.

Basically, if you don't have the right precision, high counts will only be show approximately with a "?", *and* apparently also not listed. Makes record keeping more important, I guess.

Edit: And it also makes sense. If the bookkeeper could tell you the details about every single item of that type (as in the detailed listing), he or she probably should also know the total number...

Well... It doesn't really make sense in the sense that I have almost fifteen thousands of those... All I want to know is roughly how many of each ores I have, but he doesn't show anything. Thus why I think ores should be in a different submenu than merged with rocks...

I'll try to switch my bookeeper precision to the highest to see if it change anything.

wouldn't it be easier to just make a ore stockpile than have you bookkepper count every rock in the fort?

Sic a poor immigrant peasant on the 'bookkeeper' task with perfect counts.

Then, when he's legendary, send him to the royal guard and replace him with another penniless hauler.

It would indeed be nice to get approximate counts of each category, though.

It would be nicer to see ore, economic stones and non-economic stones in their own seperate catagory. But seriously, how can you have that many stones and not have had enough free time on for one dwarf to get the accuracy to the highest level?  :p

I would, but I'm not really interested to have a dwarf who's doing only that. The position is currently occupied by my leader which also is the mayor and the broker, as well as the craftdwarf.

I didn't get to play again since then, but I heard that if you set your setting to highest rating, your bookkeeper stay there forever counting everything... Losing one dwarf for such a ridiculous reason is far from appealing to me, even if it's a peasant hauler...

affirms dreiche2's statement.

When going to highest level of counting, the *initial* cost is a lot and it will seem that the guy's there counting all the time.  during this time, you may need to temporary lower the counting level at times when the counter's needed for other duties (and set it back later).  But once the counting percentage reaches 100, the guy just have to go back once in a while to recount.  In fact, I'm still using the mayor/manager/bookkeeper/broker combination and this dwarf is still the most idle in the whole fortress (because he doesn't do any hauling).
