Getting rid of Ghosts
« on: November 14, 2011, 01:55:36 pm »

I have five ghosts in my oft-reclaimed fortress that I can't get rid of. Is there a workaround for the bug where the names are missing in the "engrave stone slab" list?

I think if I recall those are caravan guards that have been killed. If you can't reach the bodies to bury them then you're pretty much stuck with the ghosts. If they aren't too violent you should be able to survive with them. If you want you could even try building a story around them or think of them as challenges to overcome since I myself am unaware of a workaround. Bugs = features!!

Actually, they're the names of dwarves who died in my previous attempts at reclaim. Their names aren't listed as "(engrave memorial slab)" - they simply don't exist. The list is a lot shorter than it ought to be.

This is pretty much the only option if you really want to get rid of them. Other than that there is no known way to remove ghosts if they have no body and their name isn't in the engrave slab list.

It would be brutally difficult and probably won't work. In other words, it's absolutely dwarven!

You could wait for them to die of old age.

Thanks everybody. I really hated using it, but I guess I didn't really have a choice. With a few berserk ghosts, a couple howling ones, and the rest all either forlorn or restless (and their corpses all burned in magma, lol), my fortress quickly became very, very dangerous - just from its history. Especially when the five ramped itself up to 8.  :D Great fun, eh?

Don't feel bad.  I just read this thread and used it too.  I couldn't get rid of a ghost, either.  It kept creating miasma by moving my food around.  How'd you get rid of him?  I went into properties of that ghost and checked the box that said Dead.  Then he poofed.  Hope I didn't screw up the entire race of Ghosts.  I like making slabs and stuff, just not the impossible to cure ones.  Guess I'll find out with the next death.

Thank you for asking this question.  Knutor

That's exactly what I did, and they haven't shown back up. I'm sure they'll pop back up at some point - I have a lot of recently drowned bodies that haven't produced ghosts... Yeah, don't ask... lol

so uh ... how about walling them in?

does that work? dwarves are so stupid in general that it wouldn't surprise me to learn their ghosts haven't figured out how to walk through walls

Nope, ghosts have no trouble whatsoever in self-levitation, soaring through the skies like an eagle, taking comfy lava baths, and walking through solid objects (including, but not limited to, anything that menaces with spikes).

No and no. They're unharmed by absolutely everything - I tested the atomsmashing myself for kicks, though it's hard to get them in the right place at the right time. Magmawiki says they're unharmed by cave-ins too, though I didn't test it. Basically, they're invincible. Which would be epic if you could just bring them back to life and have an invincible dwarf on your hands. Then again... The coolness would get boring before long - there wouldn't be any Fun in it.
