Pacifistic soldiers
« on: March 02, 2007, 04:12:00 pm »

My food reserves were declining so I decided to take all my soldiers out for gorilla hunting. It would also be good training for them. But when the fighting and mostly chasing was going on, most of the soldiers who had shown up were just staying by their station and completely ignoring any gorillas, even when the gorillas passed right by them. At one time, five soldiers just stood near by as a gorilla beat another soldier to death.
All soldiers were set to chase opponents, harass dangerous animals and (of course) on duty.

Maybe gorillas aren't dangerous (in game terms)

Though that might be possible because the gorillas tend to stay away from dwarves, it wouldn't be consistent. Earlier I have placed a marksdwarf near gorillas and when I set him to harass animals he started firing and when I set him back to ignore he stopped firing.

That's strange, usually I can't get my soldiers to stop chasing the wildlife whenever its around...

Check your (M)ilitary screen, squad settings.  Two things you can set are --
1--Squad stays at position (good for keeping marksdwarves from strolling into battle)
2--Squad harasses wildlife / ignores it if possible

My guess, you need to tweak those.

Gorillas have [BENIGN], so I don't think the game will treat them as valid targets regardless of the squad settings.  I have no idea why a crossbowdwarf would fire on one at this point.

Unless they're actually berserk, they don't widen their target selection.  If the shots at gorillas were being determined by the 'harass' animals option in the squad info, I have no idea what's going on.
