how to get my miners out of a shaft?
« on: November 13, 2011, 04:40:08 am »

I was channeling to make a shaft, making sure to build a staircase at each level, but now for some reason my dwarves will not build a staircase at the bottom of the shaft and BOTH my miners are stuck down there. I even tried making ramps from down there, but nothing seems to work.

have them dig a few squares over in whatever direction is safe, then dig their way up via stairs.

Dig stairs with another miner and on the last z-level you make a masion or carpenter build a stair.

"What's the deep dark pit, that turns mining operations to shit?
"The shaft!"
"You see this shaft is a bad mother--"
"Shut your mouth!"
"But I'm talkin' about the shaft!"
"Then we can dig it."

Yeah, i'm bored.

Are you trying to use building materials that are at the bottom of the shaft that your builders can't reach?

Activate the masonry labor for one of the trapped miners, construct a staircase, and make sure that you use a stone from the bottom of the pit.

The first step is key and it's saved me from a lot of mining blunders.

Flood the shaft with magma.  That will remove your miners (and anything else not magma-safe) from the shaft quickly and efficiently.

And it makes a cool lava lamp.

Well, if you have magma, you could fill the shaft with obsidian and then the miners could carve stairs to freedom.

Alternatively, you could have your miners build a bridge and lever so you could launch them out of your shaft.

Just dump food and booze down the shaft. They can live there for the rest of their lives.
