(OOC:
I found that principle quite engaging and and used it as i thought the cores to be something similiar to such a Hive Tyrant: a part of the Hivemind with a bit more individuality than the rest of it (for example the termangants were as intellligent as a body part, and reverted to their primal nature when out of the Hiveminds reach.)
But if you feel annoyed by it Nivm i will take over any better suggestion how to do the Core part...
The problem with using the Tyranids (or Zerg) as a template is that they have "pooled their brain matter"; almost all members of the hive have very small, animalistic brains, while a specific few "controllers" have all the intelligence. This is not how hives work in real life, and it doesn't look like how ours works either. In a normal hive, all members are of about equal intelligence, but they communicate and work together so seamlessly that they are better described as a single being, rather than a group.
Perhaps this might help:
Master Control/Provides Form, Function and Thought...and Leadership? We lead as one.
-This core would be much better defined as "introspector", "meditative negotiator", "alignment fitter", and "mind glue", doing pretty much what I'm doing now; figuring out what each core is and insuring that they link together clearly. However, this is not done by commanding or coercing, but by teaching and telling; not to directly resolve conflicts, but to insure that all future conflicts solve themselves with little effort from any party. Unlike a store manager's, this core's work does eventually end, as it only has a limited amount more work for each entity added to the hive.
Core of Order/Provides us stability. The Chorus becomes...less alive, but stronger. Is this good?
-The reverse of what I did to Gazkull's post eariler, this core would be focused on rectifying rediculous seeming things from other people's posts; however, what is defined to be rediculous is not based on opinion, but instead based on what is physically possible given what we've learned so far, then compared to the intent of the edited action. As an example, if the mutation core attempted to make claws to break open the tank and escape, it would be met with "we would currently die from lack of nutrients and waste removal". Or in other words, it would effectively take care of all that certain kind of nay-saying.
Core of Logic/Cold, emotionless. Very much like ARK, but part of unity...we hope!
-As most of the other cores can't avoid using at least some logic, this would be better called the "Core of Math" or possibly the "Core of Immutable Thought". Extremely straightforward; it derives things based upon specific assumptions, provided information, and rules, while picking up subjects to work on from other cores.
Chaos Mind/Provides us randomness and spontaneity. We are alive. Life does not follow rules.
-Just barely like a random number generator, but provides any pattern concievable, with an input limiting the possibilities, and with a specific, short input still being recognizable when it comes out. When checked by the Core of Order, the two form a kind of "Idea Evolution Core", with one following the literal meaning of mutation, and the other following natural selection.
Core of Mutation/Sculpt the flesh...shape the bone...growing, merging, mutating...
-Not the literal meaning of mutation, this core instead handles our ability to consciously rearrange and alter our contacted cells. In-universe, it would keep track of nutrient levels, what things our DNA is prepared to make, what organ structures actually work, what physical abilities we currently have, and any other gritty details that come with being very aware of our own very complex body, but out-universe it would just be choosing what forms we should be taking based generally on what the rest of the hive wants to do ("Oh, looks like we're going to need to move soon, I guess I need to get this body ready for natural environments...[insert specific organs/structures and how they need to be created or tweaked]").
Ambassador/A kind word...a simple deed...Unity is a gift, it should be given with respect
-Very heavily overlapping with most the other cores, but not quite expressed otherwise. This core focuses on understanding other, separate minds, their social graces, and how to simply convince them, through no misleading, to join the hive-mind.
[LATER]Core of Growing/Grow! Expand! SWARM!
- [/LATER]
Core of Hate/Unthinking...unfeeling...Merciless This Rage is poison in our chorus.
-Unless someone else can think of something, I must agree with Dwarmin's summation; hate tends to be the result of a tiny, flat mind that can't understand the world around it. It is something to be pitied in any who experience it, as it will eat them up from the inside until they are too weak willed to succeed at life.
[LATER]Core of Love/ To know is to love...true love never dies...just like Unity.
Survival/ We must eat to survive...kill...breed...morality can be pushed aside? Yes...
Apathy/ Facet does not do anything! But sometimes, nothing is the best thing to be doing
Hopemind/So much life...so many to embrace. We know nothing for sure...but hope[/LATER]
*Core of Teaching/ It's hard for new chorus members to figure everything out on their own, but there's a way to help...
-The Cores we have will not suddenly be transferred to or subjugate anything that joins, and things joining might be lacking in some areas. This core would handle providing newly Joined ~cores with a better understanding of the hive and information about what they can do; both in the sense of their new body-shaping abilities (information gleaned from Core of Mutation) and in the sense of what goals they can reach that will make a difference (information gained from Master Control). This is yet another heavily overlapping core, but again, not yet expressed elsewhere. But the issue implied by this list and Dwarmin's list, is that if people were forced to stick to a single core, they would get bored quite quickly. A few have already played the roles of other cores here [it's easy to forget who posts when the right color is used], and indeed, there's no reason to discourage this. If at the time you can make a core's action better than another player has [or at all], it's probably best that you do so.
There are plenty of problems with this, but most of them can be steamrolled as long as we think of this
not as a character guiding game,
but as a train of thought building game.
Predit: Not done, but I'm tired, and I know if I try to come back to it later it might not get posted for a day or two as other things come up, and by then it might be rendered invalid.
Edit: Still not done, I'm a bit pressed for time this weekend.)
