i actually took this from some Tyranid Story i read not too long ago. In this particular story, The more intelligent beings, namely the Hive Tyrants, are controlling smalelr parts of the Tyranid swarm. Acting as "Generals" they need to have some traces of individuality. The writer wrote from teh eyes of one of those beings. he referred to himself(the Hive Tyrant) and his underlings as "we". But he also felt the other parts of the swarm, for example in an attack he felt the pain of a fellow Hive Tyrant when he got under fire. In this cases he referred to "We". And finally when he recieved orders from the Hivemind, he referred to "WE".

(The best I can figure is that the UNITY is not your garden variety Hive Mind. Aside from that the cores add interest and an opportunity for an engaging way to drive the story.)

(We are not completely homogenous, but we are still connected enough to count as a hive mind. Being non-standardized can be quite an advantage for a hive mind, as more variation leads to more adaptability and creativity.)

A Hive Mind is normally one mind, many bodies. If we are a Hive Mind, we're the first variant there- each member contributing towards a greater whole.

That said, we're more "many minds, one body", which fits the description for Mind Hive- whether this is by design or not is up for debate. Privately, this is what I suspect overmuch Discord will do to us- cause our stronger personality traits to gain too much individuality and split.

I've got a running headcanon/WMG that the UNITY was created by merging multiple people/organisms into one organism and the Chorus and cores are part of how the minds are coping to the change.
