A 3D engine would make the game so much better because 3D is awesome, and it would make stuff easy to see, will it ever be implemented toady/random people?

Considering that the main reason that DF became bay12's main fantasy game was because their previous one had a clunky 3D engine that was a pain to develop things for, I sincerely doubt we'll ever see a 3D DF.

DF Will most likely retain its current two D visual engine, but at the same time there are 3d renders for dwarf fortress, we just need one of the newer real-time ones to develop an interface and you will have it. Till then, you will need to use the 2d visualizer for this big 3d world.

Quite possibly never. DF is a serious resource hog just as it is, having to render whole 3D shapes would be like playing Crysis on the ENIAC.

Also, this topic has been discussed many, many times already.

3D graphics would not ruin performance if done well.  Most of the extra work is done on the graphics card, and 3D graphics don't have to be super costly. Even my cell phone can play 3D games.

However, it would take a lot of work to do well.  Toady would need 3D artists to design and animate all the items, creatures, furniture, etc.  He would probably also have to write a voxel rendering engine for the terrain, and that can cost a lot of CPU power if not designed carefully.

Your cellphone processor will explode if you try to run DF with it, if Df was 3D your cellphone would implode the universe.
