here is a concise history of necromancy. I may have left something out or screwed up some math. So it'll be subject to revision at a later date if need be.
The relavent history of Necromancy Begins roughly 600~ years ago. At this time Necromancy was only slightly less acceptable as most forms of magic and was closley connected Vivimancy the magic of life to necromancy's magic of death. As such necromancers were resected not only for traditional necromancy but for healing injuries and curing the sick. Among the most common uses of necromancy was raising the dead for cheap labor, or as last measure defences or contacting the spirits of recently departed dead for a final farewell, and calling upon honoured ancestor spirits to protect ones home in a ghostly form, or provide wisdom to the living family. The most expensive and coveted use of necromancers of that time was the ressurection of dead though this was so expensive it was restricted to succesful adventurers and the obscenely wealthy. There Had always been friction between the temples and necromancers as the priests felt that necromancy ward the Gods plans (and indeed any magic such a vivimancy, divination fell under these taboos as well.)
At this point an unknown necromancer know only as Larz Garov came to prominince in The city of Donlan and quickly rose to the rank of master necromancer, though None knew who he studied under. Using his influence in the necromancers guild Larz Delved into the studies of life, death, undeath and immortality. Some decades later Larz revealed a new state of existence, apart from Life and undeath, Which he Dubbed Unlife.
An alternative to the magic which gave animation to the dead it was said to create a Dark mirror of life instead creating neither a simple Automaton such as a zombie nor a Fleshless spirit such as a ghost nor was it a Dead soul bound to a living body such as a vampire. Instead it was an existence that was seperate and apart, Capable of independant thought and actions. A conglomeration of souls in a body with unlimited potential. Crafted and scultped like a golem but made out of Unliving flesh, The creation was thus called a "meaty automaton" Flesh Golem.
The Temples Immediatly caused much public outcry claiming bestowing life was the province of gods not men. The Necromancers ignored them. Despite numerous pleas from other necromancers for Larz to teach them the secrets of Unlife, Larz didn't take any students stating that
"it's to dangerous for fools such as yourself to be creating something so far above your understanding"
After Time Several necromancers immitated Larz's Techinque through observation and created flesh golems of their own. These golems lacking the proper spells and attention to detail that made Larz's golems safe and quickly went on a violent rampage within months of being created destroying the city of Donlan and freeing all other flesh golems who had not yet Betrayed their masters. Even The original creator Larz's golems escaped control freed when Larz was put in a near death state. It is widely accepted that a single golem Made by a novice in necromancy went beserk and killed it's master alog with several other necromancers who had golems of their own. This caused a cascade of beserk golems, the minority of which retained their intelligence. These Intelligent Rogue Golems drew energy from the surrounding area feeding off the life of those who tried to stop them and growing ever stronger.
Larz Took matters into his own hands and hunted down all of his own golem and several of the rogues created by other Necromancers. Of the 48 golems Larz destroyed 19 by himself. While Larz was so occupied The church was forming their own anti-golem strategies, Relying on purifing holy energy and antimagic to break the bonds which held souls to flesh, It took 23,000 soldiers 600 paladins, 900 priests and 300 antimages to destroy 24 golems.
Of the remaining five golems two dissapeared into the GloomHearte Forest and one hid in Mount Valaneir. Another took to the sea in a stolen boat. The location of the last Golem is unaccounted but it is suspected to have fled to the northlands. Larz Garov was said to have died in pursuit of this Golem.
After the end of the Golem war the city-states and remnants of countries banded together to form the Country of Bruge. As one of its founding tenants all forms of necromancy and vivimancy are strictly forbbiden on pain of death. Any possesion of necromantic tools also carries a death sentance. The original Creator of flesh golems, Larz Garov was given a death sentance, to be killed on sight, Plus a bounty on his head worth 10,000,000 gold. This begun a series of Necromancer hunts throughout the country and surrounding regions.
During the hight of these hunts an unknown Necromancer Came from the wild Calling Himself Varol-Zarg. Varol-Zarg Then Used an army of skeletons and zombies to build a city over night. Once built He named the city Malemoot and declared it a safe haven for necromancers, Vivimancers and all forms of magical practioners.
The next 300 year Bruge Attacked Male moot over seventy times each time being beaten back by A combination of armed mercenary soldiers, Undead and the apparently immortal Varol-Zargs powerful magic. The Source of Zargs immortality is a subject of much debate with theories ranging from, life stole from unborn children to there being a succession of men all named the same.
Regardless Varol-Zarg's immense power prompted Two rebelious cityies at the edge of Brugian territories to seccede form the Mother land and offer tribute to male moot In return for protection and autonomy. These two cities, Ragleffed (Rag-Lef-Fed) And Quincy (Kwin-sEy) are know as the MaleMoot protectorates.
During the last war 150~ years ago Zarg allowed the entire invading army into the city, yet ordered the citizens to go about business as normal. As soon as the invaders attempted to harm a citizen or damage any part of the town in anyway, they were instantly struck dead, With no cause or wound. After their death Their corpse was immediately reanimated and would walk to the cities graveyard, lay down to rest and deanimate. With this single unsurpassable act of necromancy Varol-Zarg single handedly ended the war, without a single drop of blood shed on his city's part. Since then There has been no Brugian invasion, but Recently The military of Bruge Has begun to stir, And it looks like the long peace might be coming to an end.
