Mercury: The Forgotten Element
« on: November 11, 2011, 09:54:52 pm »

Lately I've been thinking a lot about the Temperature variable in my fort. Then it hit me like a ton of bricks: Cinnabar. Cinnabar is a ore of mercury... dwarfs could extract it from cinnabar, and keep it in a container such as a glass vial. A new profession could create thermometers and barometers with the stuff, and interpret the data from said items into temperature and a rudimentary weather forecast system. Because sometimes, inclement weather is just to much for a dwarf to take. I thought it was a great idea, and I was hoping from some feedback from the community to see if anyone agrees or not.

As shown by an easy search for "mercury cinnabar", this has been suggested and discussed many times.

Indeed, it is.
I see no use for Mercury in DF
And I think  Toady wants a more "abstract" way of measuring temperature like "It's cold" or "t's very hot."

Actually apperantly Mercury can be used in the mining of gold.

Of course this is ignoring the "cosmetic" (some people still think mercury is beautiful) and "Mystical" and "Alchemical" propertise of mercury.

No you dont understand. Gold = useless as your dwarnes can only trade it and make statues. Mercury = !!FUN!!
Plus the tech is probably way out of time. I still think it would be a damn great thing to use as a defense. Its a poison, that is damn heavy and can be applied upon contact so that makes it wasy better for making traps with than any other thing in the game... besides Magma... And bagers.

Can explain much of the madness that undergoes during the production of the Bloodfist or any of it's siblings. That logo is 50% cinnabar.

There are already a lot of topics asking for Mercury for the sake of drowning enemies and poisoning them in it anyhow.

If dwarfs use too much Mercury, it could leak to an nearvy river or aquifer making it toxic,  here in brazil there are some dumb asses that still use it to mine gold and/or kill indians.

By the way, when mercury was discovered?
