Sometimes animals just get out of control.
« on: November 11, 2011, 05:55:51 pm »

I keep getting quests beginning with this line from soldiers in corrupt (my custom race) fortresses.  I figured it was just something like a wolf that had earned a few kills, but then I realized that it was much stranger than that.  The soldiers were asking me to kill the leaders of their civilization, including the leaders in their own fortresses.  Any suggestions as to what I should do, or ideas as to what might be going on here?

This just got a whole lot weirder.

The leader who gave me this quest is one of the corrupts.  I went to a human fortress nearby, and the lord there gave me the same quest (with nearly identical dialogue).

What the hell... That's bizarre that they treat historical figures in their civ as animals and quest targets.

My guess is that there's something in their raws that forces the game to consider them wild animals, letting them be selected as quest targets simply because they have kills/are a historical figure. In gameplay; if you leave the town you started in to travel to another, are you automatically considered hostile to that new town? It's been hard for me to pin down what causes that, but it's a function of the entity raws and might be affecting this situation as well.

Raws, plox?

That whole "regains his composure" bit is new text to me, as is a few other lines. There's so many things that just never come up in vanilla. Anyway, this just seems like a modding issue. I'd suggest asking about it in another thread over in that part of the forum, and post your creature/entity raws there for a looksie.

I thought about putting this in modding, but I think it is more relevant to adventure mode.  Anyway, I have a hypothesis about why this is happening.  I left some stuff about corrupts appearing in the wild in their creature files, along with the [LARGE_PREDATOR] tag and some others like it, which may have something to do with it.  Oh, and they're [EVIL].  That's probably a factor.

Spoiler: the creature raws (click to show/hide)

EDIT: Oh, and remember that corrupt I had to kill?

Yeah.  I eventually decided to kill Par, earning me the wrath of every corrupt in the civilization, including the ones who had sent me to kill her.  When I went to report it to a human lord (who had also sent me after Par), he just said "rumors from distant lands cannot save us.  Note that his castle was literally seven travel map tiles from the castle where Par was.

LARGE_PREDATOR seems to allow creatures to be used for quests (spawned in lairs?). My predatory arboreal octopi occasionally show up in legends as a nuisance to some town or another. However, I've never directly received a quest to kill one because I've not played adventure mode recently, so I couldn't help you there.

I'm going to check legends mode at some point to see what, if anything, Par did to earn the undying hatred of her own family.

Ah! Was she night-creature'd maybe? Or do your giant metal humanoids not get that sort of thing?

No, she wasn't a night creature spouse or anything.  They're not particularly giant, either.  They're dwarf-sized.

LARGE_PREDATOR makes large roaming creatures to ambush adventurers, as well as allows them to qualify as "quest targets" if they have historical kills.

I guess Toady didn't think about adding a new check if it's a civ creature since in vanilla no civilzation creatures have (or need) this token.

It's probably this. It sounds like [LARGE_PREDATOR] tag causes that race to behave in ways like a cougar would for example during worldgen; in that they will strike down sentient peoples and then adventurers can kill the offending named beast.

I just got the "has to regain her composure" thing with a night creature. I also got this:

"My maternal grandmother is named Thad Grizzlytrades."

Innu Lakalastrat is overcome for a moment.

"No... I don't want to talk about it."

Now that is interesting.

EDIT: Aah, I kept pestering her about her family and she had the same message about the very night creature uncle that she had to regain her composure about.

Someone should make a thread on these special hidden moments, where someone [maybe] shifts a bit in the raw folder and then it uncovers something hidden. I never knew those NPC's could feel in depth!

It's not hidden, it's related to a relative who is a target of an assasination quest somewhere, and it comes from the Night Creature update. It's funny how it works with LARGE_PREDATOR too. *Checks raws* Yep, apparently night creatures attack people using LARGE_PREDATOR behavior, and they have it in their raws, so it explains it.

Nothing strange here.
