quick n dirty way of 'seeing' cave features
« on: November 13, 2007, 08:04:00 pm »

just recently i decided to start at the position the map defaults to, and apparently lizard men and cave crocodiles keep dying, ending up as "Deceased" on the unit pane.
This wouldn't normally be a bug, but since the cave river is not only underground, but also UNEXPOSED, i should have no knowledge about who dies and who doesn't down there. Especially since i can't see it, or even know about it until i breach the area and discover it.

As well, i find it somewhat odd that these critters are able to kill themselves simply by failing to stay the hell away from the waterfalls, especially those leading downwards into a chasm.

...
Just a little odd that the unit page would tell you about creatures that fall to their deaths in a cave feature you have no knowledge about.

Even worse, if you get a bookkeeper to sit and catalog your stocks, he'll catalog cave spider webs in closed-off areas that you haven't even discovered.  I was able to discover the locations of chasms and underground caves simply by going to the stocks screen, finding a spider web that appeared in red, and then hitting z to zoom to it on the map.

Ratman bones from the stock screen told me where to dig for the chasm.   Maybe the same method as in pits could be applied to chasm and underground river?

You had to dig for your chasm? I've seen three and they're all open all the way into the open air. I've not seen a cave river or magma at all, though  :(

The demon pits apparently don't get populated until you actually break into them.  Toady said that using Reveal would show the pits, but not what's in them until you actually dug to them, but he also wasn't sure that would work after Reveal had been used.

Someone said in another thread that reveal had prevented the demon pits from populating properly.
